Chapter 6
"So, I was thinking," Sanya began, flipping through her sketchbook, "I could design something traditional yet edgy for you—an ethnic dress that still has all those intricate details to represent your family's artistry. And something more traditional for uncle?"
Their project together was coming to a close. And before the entire entourage left to Delhi for the launch, the company had planned a showcase and photoshoot at Sheesh Mahal to celebrate their success. Arnav couldn't be happier with the way the designs have turned out so much so that he foresaw the collection selling out in minutes post the launch.
Khushi smiled, appreciating Sanya's enthusiasm but hesitant. "I actually had something else in mind," she replied softly. "I think I want to wear a saree. It's my father's work—one of his hand-embroidered ones. I thought it would fit the spirit of the project perfectly, and it would mean so much to him." Her eyes sparkled with pride as she spoke, her fingers tracing the delicate chikankari stitches on the saree she'd brought along.
Sanya raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "You mean... wearing something that represents the legacy we're celebrating? Actually, that's a brilliant idea," she said, pausing to envision it. "And with you in it, it'll be a beautiful tribute to your family's artistry."
Khushi grinned, visibly pleased. "And... I brought a second saree, just in case..." She lifted a soft pastel blue from the collection, its delicate embroidery gleaming under the lights. "If you'd like, you could wear this one. It would make both of us part of the story—this work by hand artisans who deserve this stage."
Sanya blinked in surprise, touched by the offer. She gently ran her fingers over the fabric, her expression softening. "That's so thoughtful, Khushi. It's stunning, and you're right, it's perfect for the project," she said with a smile. "But if I'm wearing one of uncle's masterpieces, then I insist on at least designing the blouses for both of us."
Khushi laughed, nodding in agreement. "That sounds fair enough," she said, her smile warm.
Sanya flipped her notebook open, starting to sketch with a look of excitement in her eyes. "Now, imagine this—something that complements the saree but adds a bit of edge. Maybe a delicate design with fine embroidery for you, and a more structured style for me. Both pieces will bring out the details of the saree work but add a touch of elegance and surprise."
They laughed together, their heads close as they continued to sketch and exchange ideas, both proud of how their vision was coming to life. The warmth of their friendship shone through as they worked, a shared respect and excitement for showcasing the beauty of Indian handwork blossoming in the sunlight that filled the studio. In Sanya, Khushi found a friend she hadn't hoped for when she had come to work here. She knew she would miss Sanya when all this was over in a couple of weeks.
"Sanya ji... I've never worn anything like this before," Khushi stammered, a blush creeping up her cheeks. A week had passed and Khushi was holding the now finished garment in her hand which Sanya had made for her. Following the work day, they were getting ready for the showcase and Khushi didn't know what to do. She probably shouldn't have given Sanya a free rein about the design and now she didn't even have time to get a spare ready!
Sanya chuckled, leaning back with a mischievous smile. "Oh, come on, Khushi. What are you, fifty? You're barely twenty—live a little! You're young, beautiful, and it's a photoshoot celebrating art, after all. This will look stunning on you and it complements the saree so perfectly."
Khushi bit her lip, glancing at the blouse and feeling a mix of curiosity and hesitation. "But... this is too... you know, bold?"
Sanya waved a dismissive hand, grinning. "Khushi do you even know what bold is? A little daring I would say and it won't hurt. Besides, with that elegance you naturally carry, you'll make it look graceful, not scandalous. Trust me, Khushi—this will show the world that you're not just a traditional girl but a confident woman who can wear her heritage with pride."
