The fire was crackling in the background, progressively getting quieter. You opened one eye half way and threw the log sitting next to you in the fire. You closed your eyes again for a little bit and then remembered about the fox. He was still sitting next to the fire. You were still lying against his chest and he was sleeping with his arms still around you. You sat up startled as you pushed him away from you hardly and backed away slightly.
"Ow!" The fox yelped, rubbing his head while still lying on the floor. You helped him up and gently rubbed the back of his head, where he had hit it on the stone floor. Considering that he already had a bandage for the injury on his head from the crash, you couldn't give him another one. "It's fine mountain girl. I've hit my head harder before."
You raised your eyebrow, confused.
"What?" Tails asked. "Oh the name? Yeah I figure if your not going to give me your actual name, might as well use a nickname."
You nodded in agreement and smiled. You liked the name 'Mountain Girl'. You gave Tails another bowl of your green soup and checked his injuries. Nothing bad, they seemed to have healed very fast.
"Ow," Okay, maybe not. But there was nothing major so he should be fine. You look back at Tails, who is eating the greeny soup while looking around. You could tell he was trying not to move around much as you rewrapped the bandages. You patted his head to tell him that you were done, which he returned with a smile.
"Thanks,"
You got up and sat next to your rock table and took a small notebook into your hands. It had a worn out cover with a stubby pencil poking out of the crease.
"What's that?" Tails asked, coming and sitting next to you again. He looked in the book and saw multiple different drawings of the forest and the mountain. "Can I look through that?" He asked you eagerly.
You gave a skeptical look and thought about it for a moment, sliding your fingers on the rough cover. Then you handed to notebook to the fox and watched him look through it. Tails flipped through the pages in awe. The drawings were really good and seem quite realistic in detail. Then he flipped to a page a drawing of a young woman smiling and looking happy. Tails looked at the drawing carefully.
"I feel like I've seen this person before, but where?"
"Hey Mountain Girl, who is this?" He pointed to the lady in graphite. You looked at the picture and stayed silent. Tails noticed your expression change from calm to somewhat sad. You took the stubby pencil from the book and wrote three letters on the bottom of the page.
'Mom' , you wrote something underneath it. 'Before she died'
Tails looked at the last three words and gasped quietly. You dropped the pencil on the floor and stared at the picture sadly. He looked back at you and noticed you were slowly starting to cry again. Tails put the book down and hugged you again. He didn't say anything and let you cry on his shoulder. He placed his hand on the back of your head as you wrapped your arms around him and held him tightly. You didn't want to let go of him, he made you feel safe.
After about ten minutes, you sat back and wiped the remaining tears off your face, sighing sadly.
"Is there something else wrong?" Tails asked. You looked into his eyes and observed them closely. They were the sky blue that you haven't seen in someone's eyes for 11 years. You shook your head softly and picked up your notebook. It was still opened to the page of your mother. You turned the pages back and Tails watches the pictures flip by. He held his hand out to stop you from flipping pages when he saw something. A picture of a snake around your shoulders was drawn into the paper. You were smiling happily in it with the snake wrapped around your arm and resting its head on your hand.
