Scotland, Almost at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry , 1st September, 1992

Lilith's eyes darted between Ron and the quivering dashboard, anxiety crawling up her spine like frost.

"Come on," he urged, his voice straining, knuckles pale as they gripped the steering wheel. He gave it a desperate shake, trying to coax one last breath from the faltering car. Narrow jets of steam sputtered from under the hood, and the groaning engine gave a pitiful lurch.

"Is it supposed to make that sound?" Lilith whispered, her voice tight with fear.

"No, definitely not," Ron muttered, eyes darting nervously to the dashboard.

The air inside the car was tight, pressing against her chest. She slipped her cardigan back on, as if its thin fabric could somehow anchor her amidst the chaos. Her gaze flickered nervously toward Harry, whose fingers were clenched so tightly around the seat edges that his knuckles blanched. The lake below stretched out like a dark, endless mirror, its surface catching shards of moonlight. A mile down, it seemed both beautiful and merciless.

The car lurched again, a nauseating wobble that made her stomach clench. Ron's voice, thin with fear, muttered, "Nearly there. Come on..." But even he sounded unconvinced.

The castle's towering silhouette loomed ahead, its spires slicing through the night like ancient sentinels. Relief surged in Lilith's chest—they had made it. Almost. Ron's foot slammed the pedal to the floor, trying to will the car forward.

"Please, please, hold on," she pleaded, gripping the armrest so hard her fingers ached.

There was a clunk, a sputter, and then silence.

"Uh-oh," Ron breathed, the single syllable weighted with dread.

The nose of the car tipped downward, and suddenly, they were falling. The ground surged toward them, a blur of dark stone and shadow. Lilith's breath caught as Ron yanked at the steering wheel with a panicked shout, turning the car just enough to miss the castle wall by inches. The cold rush of air swept her hair back as they veered wildly, skimming over the greenhouses and vegetable patch, the car's magic sputtering like a dying flame.

"Stop! Stop!" Ron roared, wand in hand, pounding the dashboard in a futile attempt to coax life back into the vehicle. The ground was rising fast, a dark expanse of lawn rushing to meet them.

Harry's voice cracked with urgency, "Watch out for that tree!"

"Oh no, not that!" Lilith gasped, eyes wide as the gnarled branches hurtled toward them.
