Chapter Seventeen - My Spy (Harvey)

Start from the beginning

Quiet. Spy goes back to stirring the sauce.

"You understand by now that we are a lenient... household, so to say," Spy picks up the two packs of spaghetti and opens them. He empties the bags in another pot full of boiling water. "You grow up with very stubborn adults, who are very determined to give you something out of this arrangement. We love you, all of us, but we also have different beliefs on parenting."

Spy smirks. Harvey just fixates on the Frenchman. He doesn't seem to mind.

"I have no idea where this spiel is going," Spy sighs. He stirs the spaghetti with a fork. "But what I want to say is that you are right about getting angry over me not telling you about your... they are your sibling now, yes?"

Harvey nods. "Yeah."

Spy nods, signaling he understood with a neutral smile. "I understand if you wish for me to keep away from you after that. I could have trusted you with knowing so much more than I told you. There are rare moments that I am wrong, and this is one of them."

Harvey smiles. "I missed you, Spy."

Spy finally looks at Harvey. He tugs at the neck of his mask, not knowing what to do with that response. Harvey wonders if she said something wrong, until Spy is looking over the pot again and is waving Harvey over.

"You're a good child," Spy adds some pepper to the sauce. "A stubborn one, yes, but we are all happy to have you here. I consider myself lucky to see you still here."

Harvey stares into the pot, watching the bubbling red sea with its tiny islands of meat. Spy covers the pot with a lid. The plastic glass immediately fogs up. Spy turns his attention to the spaghetti, which he claims is almost done.

"Can you do me a favor and call the others to dinner? Engineer is trying to fix the speakers again," Spy requests. Harvey nods. "Merci, Tournesol."

Harvey, with no more words to say, leaves the kitchen with a more content silence than when she entered. Her first thought is to check the rec room for any mercenaries besides Demoman. Turns out Soldier, Scout, and Pyro have joined Demo. She tells them all dinner is ready and moves on to the infirmary. Medic and Heavy are in there, talking at Medic's desk. She simply tells them and leaves as fast as possible. She doesn't hear a word they say, but she gathers that it might be something serious.

So she only needs to worry about two more mercenaries: Sniper and Engineer. She decides that she'll search for Sniper last, since he's going to be harder to find. Hell, he could be in a secret room and she'd never know.

Harvey pops her head into the workshop and calls for Engineer. He's straight across from the door, on the opposite wall. He doesn't seem to hear her. She flicks the light and turns it back on. He looks up, having been disturbed by the sudden darkening and relightening of the room. The man turns around and smiles at Harvey.

"Dinner's ready," Harvey announces.

Engineer nods and starts putting a pin on whatever he's doing to the speaker to go eat. Harvey doesn't stick around for long—she's already heading to the back door for Sniper's tower.

As soon as Harvey walks out that door, the sun's final glares of the day flashes in her eyes. Somewhat blinded, she walks to the foot of the tower and calls for Sniper. She calls him one, two, three times, each time looking for his faraway face. She sighs and decides to look for the Aussie's camper. Just as she turns around, a voice calls back.

"Harvo!"

She looks up again, relieved that she doesn't have to run around the entire base. He hides once more and opens a hatch into the tower. The man slides down the ladder and lands quite flawlessly by the girl. He seems to be listening, acting like he didn't just do a stunt Harvey is going to want to try later.

Harvey repeats what she said to Engineer.

"Y'could have mentioned that earlier, I would've come down faster," Sniper laughs. "Probably."

Harvey nods, acting like she's going to believe that for even a second.

They both walk back to base together, barely a word to each other except a "How is your day?" and "It's good, how's yours?" and "The same". Other than that, Harvey could have just gone ahead and got dinner faster. Sniper's company is a calming one, however, which she definitely needs after the trainwreck anxiety she had to go through for a good majority of the day. When they get to the kitchen, both of their plates are already fixed. Just how they like it. Harvey isn't too bothered, but she can tell Sniper would have rather done his.

Regardless, they both sit down at their regular spots with the others. She takes the chance to glance at her left.

And there's Spy. Distant. Fixated on eating like always.

Normal again.
