The First Step

Five years had passed, and in the blink of an eye, my little Treala was no longer the tiny bundle I'd once cradled in my arms. She was now a curious, playful toddler, full of energy and laughter.

I had stopped working at the store shortly after Treala was born. Being a full-time mom meant everything to me, and I wanted to make sure I was there for every milestone, every word she learned to say, every step she took. But as much as I loved being at home with her, the financial strain had begun to weigh on me. Trevor worked hard at the bank, and Teagen had found her calling with her YouTube channel, but our savings were running low.

Sometimes, I'd sit on the couch, holding Treala in my lap, watching her play, and I'd wonder if there was something more I could be doing. Something more to help out. I couldn't keep relying on others, even though they never complained.

One afternoon, while Treala napped in her room, I sat down at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and a newspaper. I skimmed through the job listings, my eyes landing on a position for a Personal Assistant (PA) at a well-reputed company. It wasn't exactly what I had envisioned for myself, but it seemed like a solid opportunity-one I could do, balancing with my responsibilities at home.

I ran my fingers over the details in the ad, reading and re-reading the job requirements. It was a good salary, with benefits, and most importantly, it was flexible. I could work from home sometimes, which would allow me to still be there for Treala.

I stared at the advertisement for a long moment. Should I do this? Could I handle it? Could I balance being a mom with a demanding job?

After what felt like an eternity of hesitation, I grabbed a pen and circled the position in bold, confident strokes. Maybe this was the push I needed to get back into the workforce.

That evening, when Trevor came over after work, I couldn't keep the excitement from my voice as I told him about the PA position.

"Trevor," I started, glancing at Teagen, who was busy setting up her camera for her next YouTube video.

"I found a job listing today. I think I'm going to apply for it."

Trevor raised his eyebrows as he set down his briefcase. "What kind of job?"

"A PA position," I explained, trying to keep my voice steady. "It looks like a good fit. It's at a well-known company, and it offers flexibility. I think it could be the right opportunity for me."

Trevor's face broke into a wide grin.

"That's amazing! I'm proud of you for going for it, Lila. You've got this."

Teagen, who had been listening from across the room, gave me a thumbs-up.

"Go for it, Lila! You deserve it. Plus, you'll be able to teach Treala how to be a working woman, just like you."

I chuckled, feeling my heart warm with gratitude for their support. "I'm not sure about all that, but I'll definitely try my best."

After dinner, I immediately sat down at the computer and wrote my cover letter, outlining my skills and experiences. It felt a little daunting, but it also felt exciting. I hit "submit" and sat back in my chair, staring at the screen for a moment before letting out a long breath. I had taken the first step.
---
The next day, as I sat on the couch with Treala, I checked my email for any updates. My heart skipped a beat when I saw an email from the company. They had received my application and wanted to set up an interview.

I couldn't stop smiling as I read the email over and over again. This could be it-the chance I'd been hoping for.

I called Teagen, who answered after the second ring. "Teagen, I got the interview!" I exclaimed, my voice full of excitement.

"Oh my God, Lila! That's incredible! I knew you could do it!"

I could hear Trevor in the background, congratulating me, too. "I'm so proud of you," he said. "You're going to crush this interview. Just be yourself."

As I hung up the phone, I felt a rush of emotions. Nervousness, excitement, but above all, hope. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, balancing the responsibilities of a new job with being a mom, but I was ready to try. I had to try. For Treala. For myself.

The day of the interview arrived. I put on my best outfit and styled my bangs carefully, so they framed my face just right and tried to calm my nerves. Treala was with a trusted sitter, of course Teagen, for the day, giving me a few hours to focus.

Cedric Enterprises, known for its innovative advertising campaigns and successful real estate ventures, operated from a sleek, modern headquarters in the heart of the city.

Walking into their glass-walled office space, I was struck by the creative energy in the air. Vibrant artwork adorned the walls, and the hum of productivity surrounded me.

I was led into a spacious conference room, where the hiring manager greeted me warmly. She was professional yet approachable, putting me slightly at ease.

"Thank you for meeting with us, Lila," she began as we shook hands. Her eyes briefly flicked to my bangs, and I felt a small surge of confidence. I'd chosen this hairstyle years ago to feel more polished, and today, it felt like the right choice.

"Let's start by having you share a bit about your recent work experience," she continued.

I smiled, taking a steadying breath.

"I worked as a grocery store associate for several years. In that role, I handled a variety of tasks, from customer service and inventory management to coordinating schedules and assisting with training new staff. It taught me the importance of efficiency, multitasking, and problem-solving on the go."

She nodded approvingly. "This position requires managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines. Can you give an example of a time when you successfully handled competing tasks?"

"In my previous job, there were often situations where I had to juggle restocking inventory, assisting customers, and handling cashier duties simultaneously-especially during busy seasons. I stayed organized by prioritizing urgent tasks first and making quick, informed decisions to ensure everything ran smoothly. Teamwork and communication were key."

"That's a valuable skill set," she said.

"We also face situations where tight deadlines and unexpected challenges arise. How do you typically approach such scenarios?"

"I focus on staying calm and breaking the problem into smaller, actionable steps. I prioritize what needs immediate attention while keeping lines of communication open. If necessary, I delegate or collaborate to find the most efficient solution," I replied confidently.

The manager smiled. "What excites you the most about working with Cedric Enterprises?"

"I admire how Cedric Enterprises merges creativity with business strategy across advertising and real estate. The chance to contribute to innovative campaigns and work in such a dynamic environment is very exciting. I'm eager to bring my organizational skills and adaptability to a team that values growth and collaboration," I said, my enthusiasm shining through.

"Thank you, Lila," she said as we wrapped up. "We'll review everything and get back to you soon."

As I left the office, I caught a glimpse of myself in the reflective glass doors. My bangs, neatly styled, framed a face that was equal parts hopeful and determined. Cedric Enterprises was exactly the kind of company I wanted to grow with, and I felt I had presented my best self. Now, it was a matter of waiting-and hoping-for the next step.
