The streets were alive with the chatter of vendors and the bustle of hurried footsteps, but for you, it was just another day dodging watchful eyes and searching for your next meal. The cold breeze of the late afternoon sent shivers down your spine, but it didn't bother you as much as the pang of hunger in your stomach.
That's when you spotted him.
A boy, maybe a year or so older than you, was leaning casually against the wall of a convenience store. His hands were shoved deep into his jacket pockets, and a slight scowl pulled at his lips as he watched people pass by. He was tall, lean, and had an air of indifference that made him stand out. But it was his eyes-sharp and calculating-that told you he wasn't there just to loiter.
He was waiting. Watching.
You could tell because you did the same thing.
You hadn't been living like this for long, just a few months since the last time someone you trusted betrayed you. Now, you survived by taking what you needed and keeping to yourself. It wasn't glamorous, but it kept you alive.
But there was something about him that drew you in.
Without thinking, you edged closer. Maybe it was his confidence or the way he carried himself like nothing could touch him. Either way, you were curious.
"Hey."
The boy didn't flinch when you spoke, but his eyes flicked to you briefly before he returned to scanning the crowd.
"Are you always this friendly, or is it my lucky day?" he replied, his voice flat and unimpressed.
You grinned. "Depends. Are you always this grumpy, or is it your lucky day?"
That earned you a look, a proper one this time. His brow quirked slightly as if trying to decide whether you were worth his time. After a long pause, he sighed and shook his head.
"Go away, kid. I don't need a shadow."
You didn't budge. Instead, you tilted your head and folded your arms, feigning mock offense. "I'm not a kid. And maybe I'm the one who doesn't need a shadow."
The boy snorted, clearly unimpressed. "Right. Then stop following me."
But you weren't discouraged. You'd spent enough time around people to recognize someone trying to push others away. There was something else beneath his sharp words and cold demeanor, something softer.
"Okay, okay," you said, holding up your hands in mock surrender. "But you seem like you know what you're doing, and I'm starving. What do you say we team up? Split fifty-fifty?"
