Reagan POV
Luke lost it now, too. I watched from afar as Cam tried to help him, but he just kept screaming "No!" until he became catatonic. After he collapsed, similarly to how Gwen had before, I finally got out of the car and approached them, Emily right behind me.
"What happened?" I asked Cam.
Cam looked up at me, cradling Luke's head in his hands, and I saw that there were tears in his eyes. "I don't know! He just...lost it. And he said he saw the faceless thing, and then he said...that it was him." Cam turned back towards Luke, gently nudging him. "Luke, c'mon. Wake up."
I looked over at the forest, expecting to see some sort of faceless creature, but there was nothing there. It was getting dark now. I was terrified at the thought of being trapped here for another night, or possibly...forever?
I didn't know how long we'd been at this fucked up cabin on our cursed spring break, but I knew, deep within my bones, that it hadn't been a few days. It was like Luke had pointed out: I had a hard time remembering the days or even weeks leading up to us coming here.
To be honest, I wasn't sure if I wanted to know how long we'd been there. What if it had been years? What if everyone back home had moved on with their lives, accepting that us five were dead to the world, never to return?
What if we never figured out a way to get out?
Luke began to stir, his eyes cracking open slightly. He tried to sit up, but his body seemed to have given up, and he laid back down.
"Luke?" Cam asked him. "What happened? Are you okay?"
Luke whispered something, but it was so quiet, none of us heard. We leaned in closer, gathered around him, and urged him to repeat himself.
"It's my fault," he croaked. "It's all my fault. I did it. I did this. It's my fault."
"What do you mean, Luke?" Cam asked. "What are you talking about?"
Tears filled Luke's eyes. "I killed us. The car. The...crash."
And just like that, so suddenly, I remembered. It was as though him uttering those words aloud caused a memory to get shaken loose and pushed towards the front of my mind.
I didn't want to see it, didn't want to remember, but the pieces of the puzzle began falling into place, and the image they created was worse than anything I could've imagined. It was worse than the cabin being haunted, cursed, or anything other insane explanation.
And it made everything else make sense.
I saw us in Luke's SUV, making our way to the cabin. I'd offered my earbud to Emily, us listening to music as Luke drove and Gwen sat in the front seat. The car started to swerve.
"Dude," Cam said from his seat next to me. "Don't drive off the road."
"Chill out, pussy," Luke had said, waving Cam's concerns off.
But his hands still weren't steady on the wheel. He was out of it, fidgety, tired. And then, he missed the slight curve in the road. The car veered off the highway, as Gwen was screaming at him to stop.
Stop, Luke! Stop!
I could hear the sound of tires screeching, feel the way the car lurched to the side. Emily screamed, grabbing onto the back of Cam's seat.
We were headed towards the trees, going over 70 mph, and finally I started screaming, screaming at the top of my lungs, and then—
Impact.
