Ariana walked back to her dorm room, her mind swirling with the conversation she had overheard in the library. Hidden lineages, ancient powers, and prophecies—everything felt like a whirlwind she couldn't quite catch. She couldn't shake the sense that these things were linked to her in some way. The mysterious orb still pulsed gently in her pocket, as if calling to her, but she forced herself to ignore it for the moment. There were more pressing matters to deal with.
She had a feeling that Mrs. Harper, her magic teacher, would know something about the hidden powers in Lumos Academy. Mrs. Harper was one of the few teachers at the academy who had the ability to sense the type of magic someone possessed. She had a reputation for being observant, almost unnervingly so. Ariana had tried to keep her own magic hidden, afraid that it would give away too much about her true lineage, but she couldn't avoid the inevitable. Something in her—perhaps the orb, perhaps the pull she had felt—had shifted, and she couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to change.
As she entered her room and placed her bag on her desk, she absentmindedly ran her fingers over the smooth surface of the orb in her pocket. The soft glow had dimmed, but it still held an undeniable power. What was it? How did it tie into all of this?
Before she could dwell on it further, the sound of a door opening down the hall caught her attention. She could hear Bella's voice, bright and bubbly, as she chatted with some of the other students in the dormitory. Ariana couldn't help but roll her eyes, even though she had no reason to be irritated by Bella's cheerful attitude. Bella's laughter echoed down the hall, and for a brief moment, Ariana wondered if the girl's happiness was just a mask. No one could be that carefree, could they?
Then, there was a knock on her door. Ariana jumped slightly, startled by the interruption. She opened the door to find Bella standing there, holding a small stack of books and flashing her an easy grin.
"Hey, Ariana!" Bella greeted her, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I was wondering if you wanted to study together for the upcoming test. I know we're in different sections for some classes, but I thought it might be fun to team up anyway!"
Ariana blinked, unsure how to respond. Bella's energy was so different from her own, and the last thing Ariana wanted to do was spend time with someone so... open. Still, she wasn't in the mood to be rude, so she forced a smile.
"Thanks, but I think I'll be okay on my own," Ariana said coolly. "I have my own methods of studying."
Bella seemed undeterred by the rejection. "No worries! Just thought I'd ask." She gave Ariana a thumbs-up before spinning around to leave. "If you change your mind, I'm just down the hall. See you around!"
Ariana watched her go, a strange feeling stirring within her. Bella was always surrounded by friends, but today there was something different in her eyes, something that made Ariana wonder if there was more to her than just the bubbly persona. It was a fleeting thought, and Ariana quickly pushed it aside. There was more important business at hand.
The next day, in Mrs. Harper's classroom, the tension in the air was palpable. Students were whispering among themselves, all eagerly anticipating the announcement Mrs. Harper was about to make. The class was always serious, but there was a heightened energy today, an unspoken understanding that something was coming.
Mrs. Harper, a tall woman with sharp features and piercing blue eyes, stood at the front of the room, her expression unreadable. She had a quiet authority about her that made everyone pay attention whenever she spoke. Today, however, her gaze was focused on a parchment in her hands.
"Class," she said, her voice steady and commanding, "we have a new project to begin today, one that will require you to work closely with a partner." She paused, letting the weight of her words settle. "This project will be about discovering the sources of your own magic, how it relates to the ancient powers of this academy, and what role you play in the legacy of Lumos."
Ariana's stomach dropped. She had hoped to avoid anything that involved delving into her magical heritage. But it seemed that fate had other plans.
Mrs. Harper continued, "You'll be assigned a partner, and together you'll work to uncover the secrets that lie within your own magic. The process will take time, but it is essential. You will have to trust your partner, and yourself, as you uncover the truth."
Ariana's eyes narrowed. Trust? She didn't trust anyone. Especially not anyone in this room. She already felt the walls closing in on her, the weight of the project bearing down on her. She didn't want to work with anyone, didn't want to open up about her powers. She had spent years hiding them, guarding them, and she wasn't about to let some school project ruin everything.
As Mrs. Harper began to read out the pairings, Ariana's mind raced, trying to figure out a way to avoid being paired with someone. But when Mrs. Harper called out her name and then Bella's, Ariana froze.
Bella.
Of course.
Ariana was almost certain Bella had a different kind of magic—a more playful, energetic magic, one that had always intrigued her. But the thought of being forced to partner with her made Ariana's stomach turn. Bella's carefree attitude, her openness—everything about her seemed to make Ariana uncomfortable. She didn't want to let anyone into her world, especially not someone like Bella.
As the class filed out to begin their assignments, Ariana hung back, waiting for the others to leave before she made her move. Bella, of course, was already standing by her desk, beaming, as if the assignment was the most exciting thing that had happened all week.
Ariana took a deep breath, trying to maintain her icy composure. She walked over to Bella, her posture stiff, her gaze cool.
"Let's get this over with," Ariana said, her voice a little colder than she intended.
Bella flashed her an easy grin. "I'm excited, you know! This is going to be so fun!" she said, practically bouncing on her heels.
Ariana simply nodded, her mind already elsewhere. There was something about Bella—something more than her bubbly personality—that Ariana couldn't ignore. But now wasn't the time to worry about it.
They had a project to complete. And Ariana was going to do it on her terms, no matter who her partner was.
