The star-speckled void outside the ship's viewport stretched infinitely, an endless sea of black dotted with galaxies and planets that seemed to hum with their own quiet energy. Laura leaned back in the chair, her eyes fixed on the distant stars as a wave of exhaustion swept over her. The adrenaline of the escape had faded, but the tense silence that followed felt heavier than any battle.
Jasman sat across from her, the artifact resting on her lap, its glow flickering in sync with her rapid heartbeat. Zyk was at the helm, his fingers flying over the controls as the ship surged forward. The low hum of the engines was joined by the occasional beep and chirp of alarms.
"Where are we headed?" Laura asked, pushing herself up with a sigh. Her voice was edged with fatigue but also urgency.
Zyk didn't look away from the controls. "A safe house. It's on the fringe of the Andromeda Cluster. The Shadow Nexus won't find us there."
The name sent a chill down Laura's spine. Shadow Nexus. The stories had always been whispered rumors among the salvage workers back on Earth—a shadowy organization that dealt in secrets and held power beyond the reach of governments. She had never thought it was real, but the way Zyk's face hardened at the mention confirmed otherwise.
Jasman's eyes met Laura's, a silent question in their depths. How long would they be running?
The quiet that settled over them was shattered by a sudden, sharp alert. The ship's interior lights shifted from blue to red, and an automated voice crackled from the speakers.
"Warning: Pursuit detected. Estimated time to intercept: two minutes."
Laura's heart clenched, and she was already on her feet before the voice had finished. "Who's following us?"
Zyk's hands tightened on the console. "The Shadow Nexus. They've found us faster than I anticipated." His voice was low, almost a growl, and the usually stoic man looked a hair's breadth away from panic. "They're using quantum trackers. They know where we're headed."
Laura glanced at Jasman, who stood rigid, her knuckles white as they gripped the artifact. The glow had intensified, the once subtle pulse now a steady beacon. A horrible realization dawned on Laura. The artifact wasn't just a map—it was an alert, broadcasting their location.
"Jas, we need to shut it down. Now."
The younger girl's eyes darted to the artifact, the light reflecting in her gaze as if it held the answers. "I can't. I don't know how," she whispered, fear slipping into her voice for the first time.
Before Laura could respond, the ship jolted, as if struck by an unseen fist. The sudden force sent her stumbling against the bulkhead, and Jasman fell forward, the artifact sliding from her lap.
"Brace yourselves!" Zyk shouted, turning his head briefly to meet their eyes. His own were wide with a mix of fear and determination.
The ship spun as two fighter drones appeared on the viewport, their sleek black forms moving with unnatural precision. Each had an emblem painted across its hull—a shadowed crescent surrounding an eye, the mark of the Shadow Nexus. The drones opened fire, brilliant orange beams slicing through the black as they locked onto their target.
"Damn it!" Zyk spat, twisting the controls as he fought to evade the attack. The ship tilted and rocked as they barely dodged the barrage, the lights in the cabin flickering with each hit.
Laura grabbed Jasman's arm and pulled her away from the artifact, now smoldering on the floor. "We need to get to the control room. Now."
Jasman nodded, eyes wide but resolute. They scrambled over metal panels and wires that shifted under their weight, the ship's alarms screaming in protest.
"Hold on, I'm pulling a maneuver," Zyk yelled as he spun the ship into a sharp roll. The drones veered, narrowly avoiding the sudden change in trajectory, but their pursuit was relentless.
Laura stumbled, catching herself just in time against a rail. She glanced at Jasman, whose face was set in a grim line. The glow of the artifact now seemed to pulse in sync with her sister's heartbeat, and Laura realized with a sickening certainty that Jasman was somehow tied to the artifact—and to the Shadow Nexus that hunted them.
A blast of blue light shattered the viewport as the drones fired again, this time striking a glancing blow to the ship's side. Sparks rained down from the console, and Zyk cursed as the panel in front of him flashed red, a cascade of warnings appearing in the holographic display.
"Zyk!" Laura shouted. "Can you shake them?"
Zyk's eyes met hers, and for a split second, they looked exhausted. "I can try. But if we don't make it to the fringe in time—"
The ship shuddered, and Jasman fell to her knees. The artifact's light surged, the hum vibrating through the cabin as if it were alive.
Laura rushed to her side, pulling her sister up. "Jas, tell me what you see!"
Jasman's fingers traced the symbols on the artifact as they shifted, revealing a pattern that was almost hypnotic. Her eyes flicked to Laura's, an unspoken understanding dawning between them.
"It's calling me, Laura. I think... I think I have to answer."
Laura's heart stopped. "No, Jas. We have to get out of here first."
But the artifact pulsed brighter, and the room around them seemed to spin. The hum rose, swelling to a crescendo. The drones hesitated, their fire ceasing as they paused to recalibrate.
In that moment of confusion, Zyk's voice crackled through the speakers, desperate and cutting. "Hold on! We're almost there!"
The ship lurched again, but this time it wasn't an attack—it was the sudden, sharp twist of space folding as they entered the jump gate. The darkness outside stretched and twisted, and for a moment, everything seemed to hold its breath.
Laura glanced at Jasman, whose eyes now shimmered with a strange, knowing light. The artifact had answered, but not just to her. It had reached out to something beyond the ship, to a force they were only beginning to understand.
As the ship surged forward, leaving Earth behind, Laura knew one thing: their journey was only beginning, and whatever lay ahead would be unlike anything they had ever faced.
