I was now around 3 months pregnant. My belly was showing more than most at this stage. My doctor said I looked more like 5 months pregnant and predicted the baby will be quite big.
Another thing added to my list of fears. Pushing out a monster from my nether region.
My mother and sister still had no idea I was pregnant as Ive been ignoring both of them since the news. Yes for weeks.
Today was the day I told them, but first I had to work.
The bell above the door to the store chimed and I look towards it to see our usual delivery man coming inside with only one box today. He smiles at me and hands me a clipboard.
"Light load today. It's the monthly magazines." He places the box on the counter.
"Thanks," I say handing him the clipboard and grabbing a box cutter. He leaves and the bookstore is quiet. It usually was during the mid-afternoon. It was always a time for me to take my time to unpack shipments, take inventory, and being able to mentally prepare myself for the after-school crowd.
I slid the box cutters all by the tape and open the box with force. I started to pull out the magazines one by one, scanning the barcode and then entering them into the system inventory. Most of the magazine were the usual lifestyle, travel and fitness issues, which I stacked neatly on the counter after scanning each one.
As I pulled out the next one my hand froze over the cover.
The bold headline blared back at me: "Americas Most Eligible Bachelor Engaged!"
And staring back at me as if he didn't have a care in the world was the mystery man I slept with. Dean.
No wonder I kept thinking bean. It all started to come back to me. The way he introduced himself, the way we talked and laughed. The way we kissed and made love. I had finally found out who exactly I slept with.
For a second I forgot how to breathe. The man whose baby I was carrying was on the cover of some glossy magazine with a beautiful woman on his arm.
I barely registered the small text underneath: "Dean Keller, heir to Keller Enterprises, announces Engagment to Vanessa Whitemore, daughter of Richard Whitemore of Whitemore Pharmaceuticals."
Keller enterprises. Keller. Where have I heard that name before?
I open the magazine to the page about Dean and see at the very bottom a familiar picture with wording atop of it: "Jeffrey Keller: Founder of Keller Enterprises and Proud father."
I let out a small gasp as I see Jeffrey in a suit with a small smile on his face. My boss was the founder of a famous company. My boss was a billionaire.
How have I never pieced that together? The gift? The sudden disappearance? The talk of how spoiled his son is?
I feel extra stupid.
Jeff wasn't just the kind, book loving boss I'd gotten to know. He was Dean Kellers father.
And now the grandfather of my unborn child.
The thought made my head spin. I set the magazine down and stared blankly at the counter to try and process all this.
The sound of the back room door opened startled me. I shoved the magazine under a stack of others as Jeffrey emerged from the back room, a friendly smile on his face.
"How's it going out here?" He asked warmly as usual
"Fine." I replied a little too quickly, struggling to steady my voice, "Just sorting through the new magazines."
