Mihir🦋The evening had been nothing short of perfect. After dinner, the event's formality dissolved into something far more lively. Laughter echoed through the grand hall as everyone danced, teased, and poked fun at one another. Even I, the perpetual outsider to such frivolity, found myself drawn into their lighthearted chaos.
But as the crowd thinned and the night grew darker, my attention snapped back to her.
"Do you need a ride home?" I asked, my tone calm, though my eyes held a quiet determination.
She paused, momentarily caught off guard, before shaking her head. "No, I'll manage."
I raised an eyebrow. Manage? It was too late, too dark, and far from safe for her to go home alone. She must have sensed my disapproval because she hurried to add, "You don't have to trouble yourself. I can call a cab or something."
I straightened, letting the weight of my presence press down on her. "That's not happening." My voice was low, firm, and carried no room for argument.
"Mihir-" she started, but I interrupted.
"I'm not asking," I said, stepping closer. My eyes locked onto hers, unyielding. "I'm telling you. You're coming with me."
She blinked, her lips parting as if to protest, but no words came. Instead, her shoulders slumped slightly in defeat. I took that as her agreement and turned toward my car, motioning for her to follow.
---
The drive started quietly. The city lights flickered past us, the sound of the tires against the road filling the space between us. Ruhi stared out the window, her fingers fiddling with the hem of her dress.
"It was a good night," she said softly, almost to herself.
"It was," I agreed, stealing a glance at her.
She smiled faintly, her gaze still fixed on the world outside. That's when the first raindrop hit the windshield, followed by another, and another, until the rain came down in a steady rhythm.
Her face lit up, her eyes wide with childlike wonder. "It's raining," she whispered, pressing her palm against the window.
I hummed in acknowledgment, focusing on the road, but her excitement was hard to ignore.
"It's been so long since I've seen rain like this," she continued, almost dreamily. "Do you know... it's always been a dream of mine to dance in the rain?"
Her words caught me off guard. I glanced at her, watching the way her face softened as she spoke, her voice laced with longing. A dream.
Without another thought, I pulled the car over to the side of the road.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her brows furrowing in confusion.
I didn't answer immediately. Instead, I unbuckled my seatbelt, pushed the door open, and stepped out into the rain.
The cold drops hit my face, soaking through my suit instantly, but I didn't care. I rounded the car and opened her door, bending down slightly to meet her stunned gaze.
"What are you doing?" she repeated, her voice rising slightly as she took in my drenched appearance.
"You said it's your dream, didn't you?" I extended my hand toward her, my expression softening in a way I didn't quite intend. "So dance with me."
Her eyes widened, her gaze flicking between my outstretched hand and my face. "Mihir, you'll catch a cold!"
I smirked faintly. "I'll survive."
"Mihir-"
"Ruhi," I said, my voice dipping lower. "Trust me. Just this once."
She hesitated, her lips pressing together as though weighing her options. But then, slowly, she placed her hand in mine, allowing me to guide her out of the car.
The rain was relentless, drenching her almost immediately, but she didn't seem to care. Her initial nervousness melted away as I led her a few steps away from the car.
"Now what?" she asked, her voice barely audible over the rain.
"Now," I said, taking both her hands in mine, "we dance."
She let out a soft laugh, shaking her head. "You're unbelievable."
"And you're stalling." I raised an eyebrow, pulling her closer as I began to sway.
Her laughter grew louder, her movements tentative at first but gradually more fluid as she allowed herself to let go. The rain cascaded around us, each drop shimmering in the dim light of the streetlamp.
And then, she did something that stole my breath entirely. She let go of my hands and twirled away, throwing her arms out and tilting her head back to face the sky. Her laughter echoed through the empty street as she spun, her hair clinging to her face and her dress plastered against her skin.
I froze, my chest tightening as I watched her. She was... breathtaking.
She turned back to me, her eyes sparkling. "Come on, Mihir! You can't just stand there!"
I chuckled softly, shaking my head. "I thought this was your dream."
"Dreams are better when shared," she shot back, grinning as she pulled me toward her.
Before I knew it, we were moving together, her laughter filling the air as we stumbled through the rain. She jumped in puddles, splashing water everywhere, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I let myself laugh.
But then, the mood shifted. She slipped on the wet pavement, and I instinctively caught her, my arms wrapping around her waist as she steadied herself.
"Careful," I murmured, my voice softer now.
She looked up at me, her laughter fading into something quieter, more intimate. The space between us shrank, the rain a mere backdrop to the charged silence.
Her damp hair clung to her face, her lips slightly parted as she caught her breath. Without thinking, I reached out, brushing a strand of hair away. My fingers lingered against her cheek as I whispered, "Rooh."
She froze, her wide eyes searching mine. Her smile vanished, replaced by a soft, unreadable expression.
"Do you know what that means?" I continued, my voice barely audible. "It means soul. And you... you're just that, Roohi my...rooh..."
Her face turned a deep shade of crimson, her lips trembling as though she wanted to speak but couldn't. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. The rain fell around us, the world fading into nothing but her.
Her gaze dropped to my lips for a fleeting second, and then back to my eyes. The heat of her blush spread to me, but I didn't look away.
"Mihir..." she started, but her voice trailed off, unable to finish.
I stepped back slightly, the moment breaking but leaving a heavy weight in its wake. She blinked, her smile returning, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Impossible," she said softly, shaking her head as if to clear it.
I didn't respond, my gaze lingering on her longer than I should have.
And as we got back into the car, her laughter echoing softly once again, I knew.
I wasn't just falling for her. I was already hers.
