Chapter 71 (part 1)

Start from the beginning

From the corner of her eyes, she could see the rest of them clashing with the enemy line and giving it everything they had. She bolted ahead to join the fight and quickly found herself targeted by a few of the tall, humanoid-looking aliens. One of them swung its spear-like staff at her, the blade missing the top of her head by a few inches as she ducked away at the last second. She stepped in and grabbed its wrist, using it as leverage and pulling herself towards the tall alien. She punched it hard in its chest and used her powers to take the staff as the alien flew backward, taking out the rest of the aliens.

She was quickly interrupted by another group of them, but this time they had guns. They shot what seemed to be energy particles at her. Y/n swiftly put up a shield, checking her shoulder when she noticed a stinging sensation and realized that one of their shots managed to graze her. She frowned, trying her best not to use her powers too much though she was undeniably itching to do so.

"This would be so much easier," she said as she lowered her shield temporarily to shoot some of them down with the staff, "if I could just use my powers. But no... I have to 'behave'. Of all the times to hold back, it's now," she grumbled. She feigned a shot at one of them, making it roll behind its friend. She threw the staff and it went through them, spearing them to the ground. "What if I just...? A little bit can't hurt that much, right?" She retrieved the staff with her wisps and ran toward a large group of the aliens, launching herself into the air just before she reached them. Right before she landed, she charged her fist and blasted the ground with a large wave of energy that rippled violently through the group.

"That felt...so fucking good." Y/n shivered, closing her eyes as she felt an exciting head rush. Amidst her temporary high, she did not see the two hulking creatures barreling toward her, splitting paths to flank her. She sensed danger and when she opened her eyes, she was greeted by 2 gorilla-looking creatures, much larger and taller than the aliens from before. "Shit!" She dashed away as the two creatures smashed their fists at the spot she was standing before. She climbed one of them, quickly stabbing the blade of the staff into its nape. The large creature slumped down heavily and she quickly moved to the other one.

Y/n held on tight as it struggled to remove her from its back, effectively trampling and knocking out a bunch of agile aliens that scampered around its feet. "Hey, I remember you guys from Wakanda. Very annoying to deal with." She plunged the staff's blade into the large creature's neck, leaping off its back as it fell face down to the ground, crushing quite a few of the smaller ones under its body. "Still annoying."

Y/n was brushing her shirt down, mentally remarking how she wasn't properly dressed for the occasion when she heard a sudden tune in the distance that was clearly out of place on the battlefield. She blasted a few aliens that came a little too close as she tried to find the source of the sound. "Huh? Wait, is that..." Her question hung in the air as she wondered if she was imagining things. A small orange portal appeared near her and she was surprised to see Stephen's face. "Did you hear that too?" She asked when she was done handling a few more aliens with help from a gun she nicked off one of them.

"Head to the van and protect it for now," Stephen said.

One of the aliens managed to knock the gun out of her grasp with a shot and she quickly retaliated by shooting a beam at the group of aliens that had circled her, shrugging her shoulders when she saw Stephen frown at her power usage from the portal. "Sorry, they were getting in my personal space. No more powers, promise. What van?"

"You heard it earlier. Get there, now." Stephen's face and voice were taut with stress as he spoke.

"Oh! La Cucaracha? Can I fly there? I'll get there faster," she tried her luck asking. "It's really frustrating not being able to use my powers," she mumbled.
