It's late at night (or what you presume must be night according to Sebastian's barely held-together clock) and you're wide awake. Listening to the scraping sounds of Anglers and cracking Dwellers, the water bubbling outside the facility, Turrets and the distant beeping of Anti Personal Land Mines.
Sleeping is a suggestion you've not been able to consider.
So you toss and turn in the lumpy cushions and blankets of a makeshift bed you created, in a room next to Sebastian's shop. Not within reach of any adventurous Expendables, thank God, it's your last ditch effort to retain a shred of control in your situation. At least, control is what you would have if you could sleep, which you clearly cannot, and it's unknown whether that's a comfort issue or a noise issue.
You estimate it has to have been, what, an hour? Since you've been struggling to relax for the night. A shuffling in the vents causes you to sigh, especially when you see the face of your lovely friend.
"Having trouble?" He attempts to joke as he carefully curls himself out of the vent. He shook his head, esca alight with slumbering weakness, and huffs in amusement. "Yeah, you never slept well back in highschool, either. Always had to give you some of my melatonin at sleepovers."
Sebastian slithers to you and leans against the wall, curling around you, to which you lean your head on his arm. "I remember this one time, you accidentally took two of them. Couldn't wake you up for twelve hours."
He tilts his body so he can lay his head on yours. "Part of me worried you wouldn't wake up." Sebastian laughed weakly, grateful for it to only be a memory. "Another part of me wondered if it was actually an accident, you know, you taking two."
You look up to see Sebastian subtly glaring at you with dead eyes, but you equate it to exhaustion from the night. He shrugs and looks forward to the opposite wall. "I never told you when I saw it," you perk your head up at the change of subject, curious to where it's heading, "it was during one of said sleepovers." His whispered tone shook with half-hearted laughter. "You fell asleep holding a pillow. Be lucky I had enough self restraint to not take a photo."
You smile in both embarrassment that he saw you like that, and fondness. "Michael would have, though." You said, "he'd have made a slideshow of it in Photoshop." Sebastian chuckled at the mention of your old friends.
"What happened with him, anyway? After I left for university?"
Sebastian looked back down at you, then turned his head to face you. "He got into a risky relationship, risky by my standards." He grumbled.
"Mariette?" You ask.
"Mariette Summer Randie." Disdain and disgust coat his tongue. "He went and married her. They had a kid, she cheated, he got a divorce and managed to keep the kid because the police found evidence of drugs in her bloodstream."
Your mouth lies agape at the news. "Damn. . ." You exclaim under your breath, "What was the kid's name?"
"Sady May. She should be around . . . 15 now, I think." He had to think for a moment. "Obviously I was the cool uncle."
You hit his shoulder.
"Thea was the only other one who tried helping Micheal to see reason before he bought the ring and cut the cake." Sebastian continues on, his hand creeping up your shoulder in a manner you recognise from years ago. "She was still training to become a doctor, as far as I remember. She's probably saving lives right now." The tips of his fingers run aimless circles over your skin. "Always ambitious, she was. I was scared it would break her, but she showed me otherwise."
Silence spanned a few seconds before Sebastian sighed. "They missed you, you know? I know . . . I know I did."
His grip tightened by a fraction.
"I missed you every day that you weren't there. And your habit of not responding to texts didn't help that much." The Saboteur tries to shake it off as something lighthearted. "It was like I was having withdrawal symptoms."
He breathed in deeply and looked down at you, how he held you, your tired eyes that seemed to glimmer a bit when you stared at him. He glanced down once or twice, then retracted his hand from your shoulder with an air of resignation you couldn't place. Then, just as suddenly, he twirled his tail around your body like a blanket, held you against his chest warmly. "You never ask when you need a hug. And I know for a fact that you sleep better when you're holding something." You feel your blanket being dragged over your back by his third arm.
"So, just, relax and breathe deep, yeah?"
You'd protest if it weren't comfortable in his hold. His arms are curled around your back gingerly, his tail twirling around your waist and down your own tail. Sebastian's heartbeat sets your breathing subconsciously, and you settle into a half sleep to pay some attention to his actions. His softness. He brings a hand to run through your hair and down your neck protectively, as if to silently preach safety to you in this dark hellhole.
Both of you start to drift slowly into sleep, Sebastian holding you close all the way, and you finding methods to further tuck yourself into his chest, he occasionally shivers when he feels your breath on his scales.
