She clutches her findings in her left hand as she creeps out of the expensive hotel room, shoes held loosely in her right hand. Chin-Hwa slips them on as she reaches the lobby, strutting out, confident and excited.
She treks her way back to her usual spot in the area, plonking down on her butt and moving the old, broken cabinet slightly to grab her old backpack.
She swaps her shoes out for a pair of holey socks, and puts her sweatpants on her lap for some warmth as she slides the money note into the bag and places it beside her.
Now, the main event. She eyes the prescription tab on the little bottle. Opioids. She chuckles a little bit manically, unscrewing the lid and taking out three, swallowing them dry.
With the bottle clutched in her fist, and her club outfit slightly tattered, she falls asleep.
______
A screeching sound pulls Chin-Hwa out of her sleep, and when she manages to crack her eyes open, she rushes to stand, pull on her old, tight sneakers, and rushes away while swinging her backpack onto her arms.
The elderly woman who was pulling up the shutters of her shop watches on curiously as she rushes away in her tight little dress in broad daylight.
The walk to the public restroom is always a little awkward, but she tends to blend in with the other party animals just now heading home. Are the public restrooms the cleanest place? No, but she can at least have a smudge of privacy.
She locks the stall door behind her and places her bag on the toilet seat, pulling out a long sleeved black shirt and sweatpants, as well as a packet of sanitary wipes. Stolen, obviously.
Chin-Hwa listens to the tap running and the hand dryer flowing as she wipes under her arms...and her other parts...and puts on her day clothes, shoving her dress and shoes into her backpack. She pockets her pills and smoothes down her hair slightly before leaving, tucking her shoelaces in as she goes.
She's right outside the park she often frequents, so she heads towards a bench, taking a seat and just looking around for a moment, crossing her legs and reaching into her pocket, popping three more pills and eyeing a man in a suit heading into the park, holding two large paper shopping bags in one hand and a leather briefcase in the other.
She brushes her hair back as he stops in front of a man on the bench opposite her, placing down the bags and reaching into them.
He pulls some packaged brioche bread out of one, and a scratch card out of the other. Her brows furrow. What is he doing?
The homeless man reaches out for both, but the man in the suit moves them out of his reach, confusing him.
" You can only choose one." She hears him say, and she scoffs under her breath. By the looks of him, he's not exactly gonna miss either of those items.
Chin-Hwa can't help but roll her eyes when the man takes the scratch card, borrowing a coin from the man. Of course he loses.
He does this with all the people sat around, and she only sees one man take the food. Finally, he approaches her, holding out the food and the ticket.
She raises a brow. " What's the catch?"
He smiles. It's an odd, sweet smile. Makes her feel slightly queasy. She's starting to feel a little lighter too, but that's not because of him.
" No catch," He responds, shrugging his shoulders. " Just choose one."
Chin-Hwa glares at him before taking the bread, scowling at him as he continues to smile, moving away.
