After leaving the Spiders to their work, Miles, Gwen, Jess, Y/n, and Hobie emerged from a glowing portal— into what appeared to be a void. No, wait. It was an elevator. Was it moving down? Or maybe up? Honestly, it was hard to tell.
Hobie casually peeled off his mask, shaking out his hair, and, of course, looking effortlessly cool. Miles followed suit, unmasking himself.
"How are you even cooler under your mask?" Miles groaned, his tone bordering on a whine.
Hobie just shrugged nonchalantly. "Been this cool the whole time, mate."
As they took in their surroundings, it became clear that the elevator wasn't any ordinary one. They were suspended upside down in a glass tube, rocketing up—or maybe down—a futuristic skyline that looked straight out of a Syd Mead sketchbook.
"Dang..." Miles murmured in awe, his eyes glued to the neon-lit cityscape.
The elevator doors hissed open, revealing a massive brutalist foyer teeming with Spider-People. The room buzzed with energy as Spiders in every imaginable variation analyzed screens showing Spot's most recent incursions.
"Yo, this place is wild!" Miles exclaimed, his voice full of wonder.
Jess wasted no time, addressing the Spider in charge of this level. "Any updates on Spot?" she asked Malala Windsor, the poised and efficient Spider-U.K.
Malala quirked a brow, the corner of her mouth twitching in amusement. "Let me check," she replied, her British accent crisp. Turning to the crowd, she called out, "Hey! Anybody spot Spot?"
The joke landed exactly as she intended, eliciting groans and smirks from some of the Spiders.
Jess, however, was unimpressed. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Real funny. Anybody else got jokes?"
Her question was a mistake.
Spiders throughout the hallway started shouting quips, their collective humor spiraling out of control.
Miles was too caught up to care. His eyes darted around, marveling at the dazzling diversity of Spider-People. Each one was unique—their suits, colors, textures, and even the way they moved. It was like stepping into a kaleidoscope of Spider-themed creativity.
"This is unbelievable," Miles whispered, still soaking it all in.
"This is the lobby," Gwen interjected with a small smirk.
"Oh," Miles replied, momentarily deflated.
"Welcome to Spider Society," Gwen introduced with the enthusiasm of someone describing the weather.
The building was a dizzying maze of Spiders walking either right-side-up or upside-down. Orientation was irrelevant when gravity-defying was in your skillset. Floors blended into ceilings, and ceilings into walls—it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.
Miles craned his neck as he tried to take in the enormity of it all. Yet, for some reason, his amazement didn't quite reach his heart.
The absence of a certain Spider weighed on him. If this had been any other day, if the circumstances had been different, the person introducing him to this incredible world should have been her.
She would have been ecstatic, grinning ear to ear as they explored the Society together. She would've been the one proudly explaining how everything worked.
But she wasn't here.
Hobie, sensing something was on his mind, walked alongside Gwen. His hands rested in his pockets as he asked in a low voice, "Gwendy, has (Nickname) told him yet? About where he fits in all this?"
