Jack looked up at her, his eyes searching hers for a moment before he nodded, the books and clothes clenched tightly to his chest. He took off running, his laughter mingling with the fire crackle as he disappeared to the other side of the camp, where Abigail waited for him. She watched him go, her heart feeling lighter than it had in ages. A soft chuckle beside her broke the silence, and she looked over to see Arthur leaning against a tree, his eyes on her with a look she couldn't quite decipher. He pushed off the trunk and sauntered, his boots making soft thuds in the damp earth.

"You've got a way with the boy," he said, his voice low and warm. "You've got a way with all of us."

Alexandria felt her cheeks heat up, her eyes not meeting his.

"Just passing the time," she murmured, her gaze dropping to the now empty satchel.

Arthur knelt beside her, his eyes on the fading embers of the fire.

"It's more than that," he said, his voice a gentle rumble. "You're giving him a piece of what you never had. What we all never had.."

Alexandria's eyes searched his, seeing the truth in their depths. She nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat.

"I just want him to have a chance at something better," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Arthur's gaze softened, his hand reaching out to cover hers.

"We all do," he said. "But sometimes, the best we can do is give them moments like this."

The camp was alive with the sounds of the gang preparing for the evening meal, the smell of roasting venison filling the air. Alexandria took a deep breath, letting the warmth of Arthur's hand seep into her skin. The moment was fragile, a pause in the chaos of their lives.

"I know," she murmured. "But it feels like I'm not enough."

Arthur's thumb traced circles on her hand, his eyes never leaving hers.

"You're more than enough," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "You're the glue that holds this place together. Even after everything we all had been through."

Alexandria searched his face, her own emotions a whirlwind. She knew he was right; she had become an integral part of the gang, a confidant and caretaker to many. But the thought of Jack's future still weighed heavy on her heart.

"But for how long?" she asked, her voice filled with doubt.

Arthur's thumb stopped its gentle strokes, his eyes holding hers.

"As long as it takes," he said firmly. "We're all in this together."

Alexandria bit her bottom lip, feeling the weight of his words. She knew the storm would pass, and they would face whatever came next together. Arthur watched her, his hand still covering hers. He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her cheek.

"Alexandria," he murmured, the name a caress.

Her eyes met his again, and she could see the longing in his gaze, the raw need that mirrored her own. She had felt it for a long time, the tension that stretched taut between them like a bowstring ready to snap. It was a feeling she had tried to ignore, but it was impossible to deny in the quiet of the camp, with Jack safe and the fire crackling beside them. Arthur leaned closer, his breath warm against her skin. Alexandria felt a tremor run through her, a mix of fear and anticipation. She knew what was coming, and she was powerless to stop it. His hand slid up to cup her cheek, his thumb tracing her jawline as he tilted her face toward his. She closed her eyes, her heart racing. The moment was shattered by the sound of Jack's footsteps, pounding towards them with all the enthusiasm of a seven-year-old.
