OCTAVIUS
I sort through all the documents on my desk. It's still so foreign to me. I remember being a child and sitting on my fathers lap when he was the Alpha. The owner of this ancient, ebony wood with creaks and scratches that I've yet to discover.
It's all mine now. This entire territory is mine.
The rush of power has driven few Alphas in history mad. But I will always serve my people, not myself.
I stare at the immigration documents before me. Father advised me to approve the residency of the mysterious mother-daughter duo, but I can't shake off my curiosity. Their relocation history is so extensive that I can't help but wonder if they were running from something— or from someone.
Wolves do not abandon packs so frequently. We are social and form bonds. It's unnatural to abandon family. Only rogues are so nomadic.
So what's different about this family?
I glance at the clock and remember my remaining pile of paperwork. With a final glance at the family in front of me, I approve their residency by signing my name and move their file to the complete stack.
"Octavius?" Comes my mother's voice as she knocks on the door.
"Come in."
She opens the door and lingers by it. She smiles and says, "this will be quick. I just wanted to let you know that I've been searching for your maid and think I found someone."
I was originally opposed to the idea of having a maid. Someone watching over my shoulder, picking up after me and dissecting every part of my personal life. But I'm living alone in my giant family house and have no time to keep up with the household.
So I agreed to have a maid with the condition that she'll be practically unseen. I don't need distractions with all the work that I have going on.
"Did you find an older maid?"
"No, sweetheart. She's a in high school. You know that most of the older females are mated and we don't want any jealous mates."
I chuckle. "I have no interest in anyone but my mate."
"I know. I found you an unmated female. She's young and shy. She won't get in your way. Helena is her name."
Helena...I know that name.
I lean back on my chair and set my elbows on my armrests. "The girl with the sketchy past? She's been in more packs than I can count. I can't give her security clearance high enough to access my study. There's important documentation there."
"They're a good family, Octavius. They have proved themselves to be peaceful and discreet. The girl won't overstep or fawn over you. She'll do her job quietly."
I sigh, not wanting to invest more energy into this conversation. "Alright. I'll let her intern for a few weeks."
"Great. Thanks, son. By the way, Principal Wilson said he'd like to speak with you."
"The high school principal? Why didn't he schedule a meeting with me?"
She shrugs. "He just told me in passing. Keep me posted. I'll have dinner ready for you soon."
Interesting. I wonder what a high school principal will have to tell me. His rank is not high enough to directly report to me. He's skipping communication channels. And given how busy I am, he must have something important to discuss if he's demanding a cut of my time.
I glance at Helena's file and realize that she attends this district's high school.
There's no picture attached to this file. But maybe I'll find some documents about the mysterious female at the school.
