Werewolf immerses its readers in a steamy romance set in a fantasy world unique to the genre. The werewolf world is shaped by a pack hierarchy led by a powerful alpha. The pack hierarchy leads to power structures and social mobility that differ from the real world. The alpha has absolute power over his pack and hopefully his pack's best interest at heart. In return, the pack gives their alpha their complete loyalty and respect. This strict hierarchy can reflect the real world while remaining separate from real-world power dynamics, which can be used to reinforce or challenge the values of real-world society. Werewolf stories do not require significant worldbuilding; readers of the genre know to expect a pack hierarchy, which is unique to the werewolf genre.

Through pack hierarchy, a werewolf can gain a higher rank when they bond with their fated mate. For example, an omega may bond with an alpha and become the luna of their pack. Fated mates are another unique aspect of werewolf stories. The inclusion of a fated mate bond creates a particularly intense whirlwind or slow-burn romance, which is a major draw to readers of the genre. Fated mates often introduce a strong sense of longing to the story. The main characters have an all-consuming need for each other, but internal or external conflict in their relationship keeps them apart. Even when the characters have an established relationship, longing can persist through separation or conflict.

A writer in the werewolf genre has to be careful how they establish this relationship. All intimacy must be consensual. Whether spoken or unspoken, consent is demonstrated when the characters come to a mutual agreement. When writing consent, the goal is to ensure the reader understands both characters feel good about what is going to happen and then still feel good about it as it happens. They show an animalistic side that is absent from real-world society. Emotions such as desire and rage can be expressed in ways they cannot in real life. The expression of monstrous qualities can challenge social norms by questioning what is normal. Monstrous emotions and behaviors are often reflected in a body described as monstrous. It is important when writing a monstrous character to retain recognizable human qualities. Monstrous qualities can be emphasized while remaining human.
