The sky was a brooding canvas of grey and purple as Evan and Thor reached the location of the crater. Evening shadows stretched across the desert landscape, and the air was heavy with the distant rumble of thunder. But instead of the simple impact site Evan had expected, he was met with something far more elaborate.
A makeshift compound had sprung up around the hammer, its center surrounded by high walls, floodlights, and a bustle of activity. Structures had been erected in a rough perimeter, and inside, figures in black suits and lab coats moved like ants, their focus on the artifact at the heart of it all.
Thunder growled overhead, the vibrations rattling Evan's chest as he pulled the van over on the far side of a hill, safely out of sight.
Before he could get out, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at the screen and frowned.
Jane: They took everything. Lab, notes, equipment. Men in black. Said it was a security threat. Ugh!!!
Evan scoffed, tossing his phone onto the dashboard. Thor, already shifting in his seat to leave, looked at him curiously. "What troubles you?"
"Oh, apparently some guys in suits ransacked Jane's lab and stole all her gear. Supposedly for 'national security,'" Evan muttered, the sarcasm dripping from his voice.
