____________________________________Daphne spun on her heel, her heart racing, and found herself enveloped in the warm embrace of her best friend. The familiar scent of strawberries wafted around her—Lola's signature scent. It felt sweet and inviting, like a summer afternoon. With a deep breath, the tension coiling in Daphne's body began to dissolve, replaced by a wave of joy that made her groan softly.
"Oh my gosh, I've missed you!" Daphne mumbled, pulling back to meet Lola's sparkling eyes. The vibrant energy between them crackled with unspoken stories, and as she took in Lola's beaming smile, Daphne felt the weight of their recent time apart lift. They hadn't had the chance to hang out properly in what felt like ages, and this change in scenery was just what she needed.
Lola snickered, her laughter a melodic chime that brightened the moment. "Yeah, I missed you too, loser. Come on, let's get something to eat, and then you can tell me what's going on." Daphne opened her mouth to protest, to insist that nothing was happening, but Lola was quicker, cutting her off with a teasing smirk. "And don't give me any bullshit! I know your academic ass wouldn't skip school for just any reason."
A smile slipped onto Daphne's lips, warmth flooding her heart. She adored Lola's empath skills, the girl always knew what to say at the right time. Nodding in agreement, the pair made their way to the front of the café, the rich aroma of coffee mingling with the sweet scent of freshly baked pastries swirling around them. They placed their orders for coffee and cake pops, anticipation buzzing in the air.
When their order arrived, the steaming cups exuded an intoxicating fragrance that teased Daphne's senses, a blend of roasted beans and sugary sweetness that made her stomach growl in eager response. "Cafeteria food at Visions could never beat this," she hummed, taking a sip. Impatience, her fatal flaw, struck again as she winced—the hot liquid searing her tongue with a fierce burn.
Lola, quick to react, snatched the steaming cup from Daphne's hands and swapped it for her own cold tea, urging her to take a sip. "Don't you rich kids have, like... chefs preparing that stuff?" she quipped, laughter bubbling from her lips.
"Eat the rich; I hate the food," Daphne replied, accepting the cool tea that soothed her scorched tongue. She wasn't a fan of tea, but in that moment, it felt like a small mercy, a refreshing balm against the heat.
With drinks in hand, the pair stepped out of the café, the crisp air brushing against their skin as they wandered the bustling streets. They chatted and laughed, sharing snippets of their lives, the world around them a blur of colors and sounds. But as they strolled, the conversation inevitably shifted to the weightier matters at hand.
"So, what happened?" Lola asked directly, her voice steady and unyielding. She never tiptoed around subjects, and Daphne appreciated that about her.
Daphne paused, glancing at the pavement, her mind racing. The real question was what didn't happened? She took another sip of the now-cooled drink, its sweet flavor a stark contrast to the what she felt about this whole situation. "You're going to think I'm being dramatic..." she began, her voice trailing off.
Lola raised an eyebrow, her expression a mixture of skepticism and encouragement. She knew Daphne as the logical one—well, mostly—but ever since certain events had unfolded over the past year, Daphne's maturity had surged, visible to anyone with working eyes.
"Look, you know regardless of what you say, I'm on your side," Lola assured, nudging Daphne's shoulder gently, her warmth in her tone eased the slight bit of fear Daphne had.
