The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the small apartment, mingling with the soft hum of a jazz playlist playing from a cheap Bluetooth speaker. Hyun-ju stood at the counter, her hair tied up in a messy bun, wearing your favorite oversized sweater she always managed to steal. She looked effortlessly beautiful as the morning sunlight poured through the window, casting a golden glow on her face.
“Do you always have to look like you walked out of a magazine shoot?” you teased, leaning against the doorframe of the kitchen.
Hyun-ju turned to you with a sly smile. “Do you always have to stare?” she shot back, raising an eyebrow.
You walked over and wrapped your arms around her waist, resting your head on her shoulder. “I can’t help it. You’re gorgeous.”
She chuckled, a low and comforting sound that you could listen to forever. “Flattery will only get you so far. But since you’re being sweet...” She handed you a mug of coffee, the one she had made just the way you liked it.
As you took a sip, you watched her return to the stove, where she was making breakfast. A mixture of rice, veggies, and whatever else she had on her—your usual Saturday ritual. It was these little moments that made you fall for her more every day.
“I was thinking,” Hyun-ju began, cutting through a vegetable with practiced ease, “we should go hiking today. The weather’s perfect, and it’s been a while since we’ve done something outdoors.”
You groaned playfully. “You just want an excuse to show off your stamina from all that training.”
“Hey, it's good to stay in shape like this.” she said, smirking. “And you’re cute when you’re out of breath.”
You tossed a dish towel at her, laughing. “You’re impossible.”
After breakfast, the two of you packed a small bag and headed out to the nearby trail. The forest was alive with the sound of birds and the rustling of leaves in the breeze. Hyun-ju held your hand the entire time, her thumb gently brushing against your knuckles.
“You know,” she said as you stopped at a scenic overlook, “I didn’t think I’d ever have this.”
You turned to her, confused. “Have what?”
She gestured to the view in front of you—a sprawling landscape of trees and hills, bathed in sunlight—but then she looked at you. “This. A life where I could just... be myself. Be happy. With someone who loves me for who I am.”
Her words struck a chord deep in your chest. You stepped closer, cupping her face in your hands. “Hyun-ju, you deserve this and so much more. I love you for exactly who you are—strong, kind, and beautiful in every way.”
A tear slipped down her cheek, and she let out a shaky laugh. “You’re going to make me cry, and then you’ll regret it when I start sobbing on this mountain.”
You smiled, brushing the tear away with your thumb. “I’ll take my chances.”
She pulled you into a kiss, soft and slow, as if the world around you had disappeared. In that moment, there was no past or future, no what-ifs or maybes. There was only the two of you, standing on a mountain, wrapped in a love that felt as steady and unshakable as the earth beneath your feet.
And for Hyun-ju, it was everything she had ever wanted.
