—"GREEN LIGHT," the doll sang, the mechanical voice snapping me out of my tight focus as I struggled to keep my trembling hands steady.
I didn't even think, just acted. I grabbed Mina's hand with one hand, my other gripping Thanos' arm tightly. My eyes darted between them both, scanning their faces for any sign of discomfort. Thanos' fingers quivered slightly as they gripped the edge of his cross necklace, his breath shallow. His eyes were wide with fear, and for a moment, he looked like a completely different person-a far cry from the confident persona he tried to project.
"Red light," the doll's voice echoed through the air. I froze, my heart thudding painfully against my chest. The grip I got on both of them tightened instinctively, but Thanos didn't seem to notice. His eyes were focused on the ground, his body tensed as if he was ready to bolt, his fingers still trembling slightly as he stood still, his hand hovering above the cross.
Inside the pendant was a collection of small, colorful pills, but for a moment, I could only focus on how his hand quivered as he fumbled with the clasp.
'He's scared,' I realized, and that realization made me uneasy. He wasn't the confident thanos I had seen before. Right now, he was just as vulnerable as the rest of us.
The tension in the air was suffocating, and just as I was about to say something to him, the doll's voice rang out again.
"Green light."
The whole crowd was motionless, still frozen in fear, despite the given ability to move again. No one dared to even take a step, not even the desperate players who would do anything for the money. Everyone stayed stock-still, the weight of their fear evident in their stiff postures. But Thanos, still gripping his necklace, took a deep breath and popped one of the pills into his mouth.
It was as if a switch flipped inside him. His shoulders relaxed, and the trembling in his hands stopped, but something in his eyes shifted-becoming unnervingly sharp. It was like he had crossed some invisible line. His fear faded, replaced with something else.
I couldn't help but stare, my grip tightening on Mina's hand, trying not to let the growing sense of dread take over me.
Then, without warning, Player 456 began shouting from the front of the crowd.
"Get behind someone bigger than you!" His voice cut through the tension like a knife.
My stomach dropped. Finally, someone was making sense of this madness. I immediately yanked Mina behind me, feeling the panic set in once again.
"Like you're doing- follow the leader!" Player 456 urged, his voice rising above the noise. "We're running out of time, we've got to move!"
I pulled Mina behind me as I stepped forward, but then something else happened. Someone's hand reached out and yanked me back, pulling me to safety behind them. I looked up in confusion and saw Thanos, his purple hair unmistakable and his tall frame blocking me from the doll.
