Sam.

When I stepped back into the living room, Ray and Nora were seated on the plush, U-shaped gray sofa, the air between them heavy with unspoken words.
I paused for a moment, taking in the scene—Ray's furrowed brow, Nora's calm demeanor, and the quiet tension that seemed to fill the room. Pressure in my chest built overhearing Nora's words, but I suppose everyone had the same doubts as she about the move.
"Is everything okay?" Ray asked, his eyes meeting mine as I moved toward them.
"The usual," I replied, forcing a sad smile. My mother's call had been a reminder of my responsibilities in New York, another weight added to the already teetering pile.
Nora looked at me with her warm, inquisitive gaze. "How's your grandmother?" she asked.
"She's okay," I said, sinking onto the sofa beside Ray. He wrapped an arm around me, his hand moving gently against my back. "But I still need to get back to New York as soon as possible."
"Speaking of moving," Nora began, her voice trembling slightly. "I have some news. I've decided to move in with Samuel."
Her words hit like a gust of wind, unexpected and disorienting. My breath caught in my throat as I glanced at Ray, whose brow furrowed in confusion.
"Samuel?" Ray repeated, his tone edged with disbelief. "You mean your... friend Samuel?"
Nora nodded, her smile unwavering, her eyes sparkling with an energy I hadn't noticed before. "He has been more than a friend for quite some time now. We've been talking about it for a while, and we feel it's the right time."
Ray leaned back, his expression a mixture of shock and disbelief. "But Mom, he's much younger than you. Are you sure about this?"
Nora's features softened, her smile turning wistful. "I know it seems unconventional, but I've never been happier. Samuel makes me feel alive again. He's kind, and supportive, and we love each other. This isn't a sudden decision—we've been dating for a while."
I reached out and placed a hand on Ray's arm, hoping to steady him. "If Nora's happy, that's what matters, right?"
Ray looked at me, his stormy eyes meeting mine. I could see the conflict within him, the tug-of-war between his protective instincts and his desire to see his mother happy. With a heavy sigh, he turned back to Nora.
"I just want to make sure you're not rushing into anything. You've been through a lot," he said softly.
"I appreciate your concern, Ray," Nora replied, her voice steady but kind. "But I've thought about this long and hard. I need to follow my heart."
Ray nodded slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "I just want you to be safe and happy."
"I am," Nora said, her conviction shining through. "And I hope you can be happy for me too."
A smile tugged at my lips despite the surprise. "We are happy for you, Nora. It's just... unexpected."
Nora chuckled softly, the sound light and free. "Life is full of surprises, isn't it?"
Ray managed a chuckle of his own, though it was tinged with disbelief. "Yeah, it sure is. So... you're kicking Logan out, then? Is that what you meant earlier when you said he's moving out?"
Nora nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "You boys have grown up. I'm proud of the men you've become. Logan needs to find his independence now, and this is the right time."
