The com-link's open
But there's no one
Tuned in on the other side
Why did I deserve to live?
Why did I deserve to watch them die?

"We always think there's gonna be more time...." Jenner sighed, the power in the facility was slowly running down. The air in the bedrooms had stopped, the water was off, and eventually the power in the main office where everyone sat ran down. "And then it runs out."

"The hell is going on?" Daryl grumbled.

Jenner shrugged, swinging back and forth in his chair. "Energy use is being prioritized."

Carl spoke up from his seat at a random desk in the room, his now girlfriend (hooray!) still holding his hand. "Air isn't priority? Lights?"

"It's not up to me," Jenner looked confused, as if this was something obvious. "Zone five is shutting itself down."

He swiveled his chair back toward his desk and Daryl grabbed his shoulder, forcing him to look him in the eyes. "Hey. Hey! What the hell is that supposed to mean?!" Jenner didn't answer, making Daryl more upset. "Hey, man, I'm talking to you. What do you mean it's shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?"

Rick and Carl joined Daryl in front of Jenner, interrogating him, yet he still looked wholly unbothered. "You'd be surprised."

"Jenner," Rick started, "what the fuck is happening?"

"The system is dropping all the nonessential uses of power. It's designed to keep the computers running to the last possible second. That started as we approached the half-hour mark. Right on schedule." He looked to Angelica. "It was the French."

"What?" She asked from her seat.

"You asked who lasted the longest. They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution."

"What happened?" Jacqui spoke up.

"The same thing that's happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuel. I mean, how stupid is that?"

Shane looked angry, stepping forward to him. "Let me tell you-"

"To hell with it, Shane." Rick cut him off, annoyed, "I don't even care. Lori, grab our things. Everybody, get your stuff. We're getting out of here now!"

An alarm started to blare as Carl and Angelica packed their stuff, with VI shouting over the speakers, "30 minutes to decontamination." The couple shared a panicked look, grabbing their bags and rushing back to the main office with the rest of the group. Gears whirred into life as they entered the room, with Rick rushing to the only doorway leading to the elevator. A thick, metal security door was being raised over the entry, faster than even just Rick could get through.

"Did you just lock us in?" Glenn asked Jenner and he looked at the floor ashamedly. "He just locked us in!"

Jenner sat at his desk and started up some kind of camera from his computer. "We just hit the 30-minute mark. I'm recording."

Daryl ran at Jenner, just barely being held back by Glenn and Carl who happened to be standing close to the two men. "You son of a bitch!" Daryl screamed, "You lying son of a bitch, you locked us in here!"

"Jenner," Rick sat down in the empty seat next to him. "Jenner you need to let us out of here. Open that door now."

Jenner shook his head. "There's no point. Everything topside is locked down. The emergency exits are sealed."
