_______________________________________Chapter 49: "The Beginning of Forever"
The news of their engagement spread quickly within their close circle of friends and family. The moment Ray told Skyler, his older brother practically tackled him in a hug, lifting him off the ground.
“I KNEW IT!” Skyler shouted, spinning Ray around while Avilian laughed in the background. “I KNEW YOU TWO WOULD END UP TOGETHER!”
“Skyler—put me down!” Ray protested, but he was grinning.
Matthew, standing beside them, chuckled. “Glad you approve.”
Skyler set Ray down but kept his hands on his shoulders, his eyes filled with pride. “Approve? Dude, I’ve been waiting for this to happen since high school.”
Avilian stepped forward, giving Ray a warm hug before turning to Matthew. “You better take care of him.”
Matthew smiled, wrapping an arm around Ray. “Always.”
The next few days were filled with celebration. Their friends congratulated them, with Leo dramatically pretending to wipe away tears. “Our little Ray is getting married,” he sniffled, nudging Jarren, who just laughed and shook his head.
Viviane and Mary were more subtle in their congratulations, but the happiness was evident in their eyes.
As for Ray’s dad, Mr. Evans simply nodded after Ray told him the news. “I always knew you had strong feelings for that boy,” he said, a small smile on his face. “I’m glad he finally realized it too.”
Ray felt a wave of emotion at his father’s words. “Thanks, Dad.”
Everything felt surreal. After years of ups and downs, of heartbreak and longing, Ray and Matthew were finally standing side by side, not just as lovers but as fiancés.
One evening, as they sat on the balcony of their shared apartment, watching the sunset, Ray leaned his head on Matthew’s shoulder.
“This feels unreal,” Ray murmured.
Matthew chuckled, pressing a kiss to Ray’s hair. “Get used to it. We’ve got forever ahead of us.”
Ray smiled, intertwining their fingers. “Forever sounds perfect.”
And in that quiet moment, with the sky painted in shades of orange and pink, they knew—this was just the beginning.
