The rain poured endlessly over Amegakure, the way it always did, as if the skies wept for those who suffered below. Among them were four orphans-Yahiko, Nagato, Konan, and Y/N-who had only each other in this cruel world. Trained by Jiraiya, they had grown strong together, but there was one battle Y/N could never win: the love she had for Yahiko.

She had loved him since childhood, in the quiet moments when he laughed, in the fierce determination in his eyes when he spoke of changing the world. But her best friend, Konan, loved him too. And unlike her, Yahiko loved Konan back.

Y/N never spoke of her feelings, hiding them behind smiles and quiet support. But every time she saw Yahiko and Konan together-Konan tending to his wounds, Yahiko giving her that soft gaze-it felt like another piece of her heart withered away.

One evening, as they sat under the shelter of an abandoned building, Y/N finally made a decision. She couldn't hold it in any longer.

"Yahiko," she called, her voice steady. The three of them-Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato-looked at her. "Can I talk to you alone?"

Yahiko blinked, then nodded. They stepped away from the others, the rain masking the nervous pounding in her chest.

"I won't take much of your time," Y/N began, clenching her fists. "I just... I just want to say it, so it stops weighing on me."

Yahiko tilted his head. "What is it?"

"I love you, Yahiko," she said, forcing a small smile. "I have loved you since we were kids. I know you love Konan. I don't expect anything. I just wanted you to know."

For the first time, Yahiko looked at her with something unreadable in his expression. But then, his lips parted, and his voice was soft but firm.

"Y/N... I'm sorry. I care about you, but not in that way."

She had expected this. And yet, the pain was sharp, suffocating. But Y/N had learned long ago how to hide her wounds. She gave him another smile, this time effortless, as if it didn't hurt at all.

"It's okay," she said. "I just needed to say it."

Yahiko exhaled, looking relieved yet guilty. Y/N walked away before he could say anything else. That night, she lay awake, listening to the rain, her silent tears blending into the sound.

Days passed, and Yahiko and Konan grew closer. It was natural, inevitable. But for Y/N, it was unbearable.

Then the enemy came.

Konan was taken. Yahiko and Nagato were desperate to save her. Y/N was, too, but she was also afraid-not for herself, but for Yahiko. She knew him. He would die for Konan without hesitation.

When they arrived at the enemy's base, the scene was more horrifying than they imagined. Konan was bound, injured, and their enemies sneered as they held her hostage.

"If you want to save the girl," the enemy leader smirked, "kill Yahiko."

Nagato's hands trembled, gripping the kunai they had forced into his palm. His rinnegan eyes were wide, desperate, unable to comprehend the choice before him.

"Nagato," Yahiko said, his voice shaking, "do it."

"NO!" Konan screamed. "Don't!"

But before anything could happen, Y/N moved.

She grabbed Yahiko and shoved him back, forcing Nagato's hand forward. The kunai plunged into her abdomen instead.

"Y/N!"

Everything felt distant-the rain, the voices, even the pain. She looked down at the kunai lodged in her stomach, then up at her friends, their faces frozen in shock.

"Wh-why?" Yahiko choked out. "Why did you do that?!"

Y/N smiled, even as blood dripped from her lips.

"Because," she whispered, "if you died... I wouldn't be able to bear it."

Yahiko's eyes widened. He had always known she cared about him, but never had he realized the depth of her love. And now, it was too late.

She turned to Konan, who was sobbing, struggling against her restraints. "Konan... live well, okay?"

Nagato's hands trembled as he held her, his eyes filled with devastation. "You didn't have to do this..."

Y/N chuckled weakly. "Of course I did. You're my family."

Her vision blurred. The last thing she saw was Yahiko's grief-stricken face, his hand gripping hers tightly. If only, just for once, he had held her like this in love instead of loss.

"Goodbye," she murmured. And with that, Y/N closed her eyes, never to open them again.

The rain continued to fall. And this time, it felt like it was mourning her.
