The store was louder than Billie remembered. The clinking of carts, the hum of the fluorescent lights, the faint chatter of people—it all blurred together into a background noise that made her temples throb. She tightened her grip on my hand as we weaved through the aisles, her gaze flitting from one shelf to the next.

"Billie, love, do we need anything else for snacks? You've got popcorn, but what about the candy for movie night?" I asked, smiling over at her.

She didn't answer right away, just stared at the wall of brightly colored candy bags like it was some impossible riddle. Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out. I squeezed her hand gently, trying to pull her focus back.

"Babe?" I prompted softly.

"I... I dunno," she muttered, her voice so quiet I barely caught it.

"That's okay," I said, giving her a reassuring smile. "Let's grab some sour ones—those are your favorite, right?"

She nodded stiffly, and I could feel the tension radiating off her.

As I turned to grab the candy, a cart clipped the edge of Billie's hoodie. It wasn't hard, just a light bump, but it startled her enough to make her step back quickly, almost tripping over her own feet.

"Oh, sorry!" the person with the cart said, not even looking at her before walking away.

Billie's breathing hitched. She clutched my hand tighter, her knuckles white as her eyes darted around the aisle. It was easy to see she was getting overwhelmed from everything going on.

"Hey, hey," I said softly, turning to face her. "It's alright, baby. Just a little bump, yeah? You're okay."

But she didn't seem to hear me. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, and she looked so small, so unsure.

"Let's get out of this aisle," I murmured, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and guiding her toward the back of the store where it was quieter.

She was still holding on to me like her life depended on it, her fingers digging into my palm. I could feel her slipping, the way her steps slowed and her head lowered.

"Billie, sweetheart," I said softly, crouching slightly so I could meet her eyes. "What's goin' on, bug? You feelin' too much?"

Her lower lip trembled, and she gave a tiny nod, her free hand fidgeting with the hem of her hoodie. "'S too loud," she whispered. "Too bright."

My heart broke a little at how small she sounded. "Okay, baby. Let's finish up and head home, yeah? You don't have to do anything else. I'll take care of it."

She nodded again, but I could tell she wasn't really with me. Her eyes were distant, her shoulders hunched like she was trying to make herself disappear.

We made our way to the cereal aisle for one last thing, and that's when it happened. She reached for a box but misjudged the distance, and it slipped from her hands, landing on the floor with a soft thud.

Billie froze, her gaze fixed on the box as though it had shattered instead of just fallen. Her breathing quickened again, and I could feel her trembling beside me.

"Hey, hey, it's alright," I said, crouching down to pick up the box. "No big deal, baby. Happens all the time."

She didn't move, just stared at the box, her chest rising and falling like she couldn't catch her breath.

"Billie," I said gently, standing and taking her hands in mine. Her fingers were ice cold. "Let's go, love. You don't have to stay here anymore."

"Wanna go home," she mumbled, her voice so quiet I almost missed it.

"Okay, sweetheart. Let's go," I cooed, giving her hand a comforting squeeze. "You're doin' so good, my little love."

She clung to me as I led her toward the exit, her steps slow and hesitant. Her free hand tugged at the strings of her hoodie, her face partially hidden as though the fabric could shield her from the world.

Outside, the cool air hit her face, and she let out a shaky sigh, leaning into my side as we walked to the car.

"You're okay, bug," I murmured, helping her into the passenger seat. "We'll be home soon, and you can get all cozy. Sound good?"

She nodded, curling up in the seat and resting her head against the window. Her thumb brushed her lips, and I could tell she was fighting the urge to slip fully into her headspace.

The drive home was quiet, and I hummed softly under my breath to soothe her. By the time we got to her place, her eyes were glassy, and she looked so small.

Once inside, I guided Billie to the couch and helped her settle in with her favorite blanket. She didn't say much, just curled into the soft fabric and let out a tiny sigh when I wrapped it snugly around her.

"There we go, my little bug," I murmured, brushing her hair back from her face. "All safe and cozy now."

Her gaze flicked up to mine, and she gave a tiny nod, her lips curving into the faintest hint of a smile. "'M okay now," she whispered, her voice still soft and small.

"You're more than okay, baby," I said, sitting beside her and pulling her gently into my arms. "You're perfect."

She let out another little sigh, resting her head on my chest as she snuggled closer. Her thumb brushed against her lips absentmindedly, and I smiled at the sight, knowing just how to help her feel even more at ease.

"Hey, sweetheart," I said gently, running my fingers through her hair. "Would you like your paci, love? I know it always helps you feel better."

Her cheeks flushed, and she buried her face against my chest, mumbling something I couldn't quite make out.

"Is that a yes, bug?" I teased softly, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

She nodded shyly, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of the blanket.

"Okay, baby, let's get you all comfy," I cooed, reaching for the small drawer in the coffee table where I kept her things. I pulled out the soft pastel pacifier she loved and held it out to her.

She took it with both hands, her fingers brushing mine as she gave me a tiny, grateful smile. Once it was in her mouth, her whole body seemed to relax, the tension melting away completely.

"There's my good girl," I whispered, pulling her close again. "All better now, hmm?"

She nodded, her eyes fluttering shut as she rested against me, content and peaceful in her little space.

And just like that, the storm in the store was forgotten, replaced by the quiet comfort of home.
