April 8th - 6 pm...
It's been three weeks since we've decided to try make the marriage work and ever since the night at the ball, he's been distant. He's constantly working and avoids me when I'm around him. I'm always in bed before him and when I wake up, he's already in his office, working. It makes me overthink slightly, he's going to over work himself but also, have I done something wrong?
We have another ball tonight, the Knight's Ball - the test of power. I have never been to this kind of ball before but my father and Luca used to go to them every year. All the mafia men line up and in front of them stand three innocent people that they have to kill - it's a form of showing strength and power and how you react reflects on your mafia.
I adjust my black, tulle, sweetheart, strapless, pleated, floor-length ball gown on my chest and fix my curled hair. I've gone for a simple yet elegant look as this is the ball of the year. I pair my silver, strapless heels with them and my silver clutch. I take one more glance in the mirror, approving myself of my outfit choice. I go to walk down the large, stone stairs to see Enzo stood at the bottom. His hair is perfectly gelled and he wears yet another black suit, does he ever wear any different suits? He looks up at me as he hears my shoes clicking on the stairs while I walk down them. His eyes light up slightly but he tries not to show it. I get to the bottom and he clears his throat.
"You look beautiful, can we go now?" I hear the honesty in his voice but his cold demeanour quickly comes back as I nod and we walk to the car. The car ride is silent except for my soft humming to the songs on the radio. We pull up and there are hundreds of expensive cars all around, this is going to be a busy night.
We walk inside and get to the top of the stairs, they announce "Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Romano." and all eyes turn to us, I grip his arm as we walk with confidence and reach the bottom of the marbled stairs. We sit at an empty table for a little while, making small conversation together before we get up and go speak to some other couples. The place is absolutely breath-taking; gold decorations; expensive silverware; marbled floors; off-white walls; and a beautiful crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
After a few hours, they announce they're going to start the trials and everyone goes and sits at a table to watch. I watch the first few people then feel like I'm going to explode. "I'm going to get some air." I whisper to Enzo before standing up and making my way through the ear-piercing screams of innocent people and applauding.
I stand out the front of the building and lean against the wall. The cheers are quieter and the screams are muffled. I have no problem killing people that deserve it, in fact I quite like watching the colour leave their body while they lay in their own blood, but killing innocent people is just wrong. "Mr. Lorenzo Romano." I quickly walk back inside, knowing there would be trouble if people didn't see me watching him complete his trial. I see three people, an older man, a woman who looks to be about fourty and a child. A child! She only looks around seven, I can't let this happen. I move quicker to him as he sends a bullet through the mans head without hesitation. I see a cold, hard look on his face, he can't do this. Another bullet flies, hitting the woman in the chest and he makes his way to the little girl. He raises his gun but I stand in front of her.
