Sky's POVThe car was quiet except for the soft hum of the engine. Nani sat beside me, scrolling through his phone, his face illuminated by the faint glow of the screen. Usually, he'd be chatting, complaining about how tiring the day was, or teasing me about something random. But tonight, he was uncharacteristically quiet.
His shoulders were slightly hunched, and his normally bright, lively face seemed dulled by exhaustion.
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, sneaking a glance at him out of the corner of my eye. The day had been nonstop chaos, but now that it was just the two of us, the silence felt heavier than it should.
"You okay?" I asked, trying to keep my tone casual.
"Hm?" He looked up, startled, like I'd pulled him out of his own head. "Yeah, I'm fine."
He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. That was the thing about Nani-I'd spent enough time with him to know when something was off.
"You sure?" I pressed gently, though I knew he'd probably brush me off.
"Sky, I'm fine," he said, turning back to his phone. His fingers fidgeted slightly, scrolling aimlessly through his notifications.
I didn't believe him, but I didn't want to push. Nani could be stubborn when he wanted to be, and if something was bothering him, he wouldn't talk about it until he was ready. Still, the tension in his posture and the distant look in his eyes nagged at me.
Earlier That DayThe day had started at a swanky hotel ballroom, where we were booked for a live event with one of our brand sponsors-a luxury watch company. The room was packed with journalists, cameras, and screaming fans. Everywhere we turned, flashes went off, and the roar of the crowd drowned out any chance of a quiet conversation.
The event itself had gone smoothly enough. We smiled, answered questions, and posed with the product like professionals. But then came the post-event interviews.
The reporters, as usual, couldn't resist teasing us about our Skynani dynamic.
"So, Sky," one reporter asked, grinning, "if you had to choose one word to describe Nani, what would it be?"
I glanced at Nani, who was already blushing slightly. "Just one word?" I teased, pretending to think deeply. "Hmm... adorable."
The reporters erupted in laughter, and I could see the fans in the back screaming and waving their signs.
"And Nani," another reporter chimed in, "how would you describe Sky?"
Nani hesitated, his blush deepening as he fidgeted with the mic. "Uh... dependable, I guess?"
The room cooed in response, but I noticed how Nani's expression faltered slightly. He plastered on a smile, but there was something in his eyes that looked... uneasy.
The teasing continued during our next stop-a live-streamed Q&A session for the other brand."Skynani fans have a question!" the host said brightly, pulling up a comment on the screen. "'What's the most romantic thing you've done for each other?'"
I chuckled, leaning back in my seat as the fans in the live chat exploded with heart emojis. "Romantic? Hmm..." I pretended to think, drawing it out for dramatic effect. "I don't know about romantic, but I do drive him everywhere, so maybe that counts?"
The host laughed, and the fans' comments became even more chaotic: "Sky's such a gentleman!" "He's like Nani's personal chauffeur!"
I glanced at Nani, expecting him to chime in with one of his usual playful remarks, but he just smiled faintly. His laugh felt softer, more polite, like he was going through the motions.
