Fans chanted his name so loudly inside of Levi's Stadium, their chants elevated over the music blaring. They were standing on their feet, wearing 49ers merchandise to kick off the 2024 season. Jonathan stood at the center of the field, facing his worthy opponent. The two men locked eyes and extended a hand towards each other, offering mutual respect in the form of a firm handshake.
Jonathan pulled back from him, allowing his hand to join the other one gripping his shoulder pads. The referee who separated them spoke among the loud cheering. "Detroit, you are the visiting team. What is your call?" His gaze went to the Lions' quarterback. The male picked randomly between heads and tails. "Tails" The ref flick the coin into the air. Both men watched it fly upward then fall near their feet. The referee bent down and scooped it up. "It is heads" The fans went wild at such a miniscule win. "San Francisco has won the toss. Do you want to defer or receive?"
"Defer" Jonathan answered simply then spun around and jogged back over to the sidelines. This would give them a chance to get the ball back first in the second half. The first really didn't matter much. He peered out into the crowd, searching for a powerful man who he knew was sure to be lurking around the stadium. The scandalous woman they had in common would be wrapped around his arm like a charm.
His heart quaked inside of his chest, fear of what was to become of him after the game settling in already. Jonathan made a lot of mistakes in his thirty-one years on this earth. Arguably, the one he regretted the most was a seasoned woman who proved to be his karma. Their eyes connected and the fear grew in intensity. Jonathan was a father of four children. He should've thought more of them when choosing who to share a bed with.
"JJ?" The young receiver called out to him, breaking his eyes apart from the mysterious woman. They landed on him then the huddle that had formed around him. Jonathan didn't even notice all of his offensive teammates surrounding him. He was in the center along with the head coach. "Did you hear the play?" Kyle gestured towards his mic. Jonathan nodded, despite not hearing a word that was said. He was just going to wing it. The man who was watching probably loved that idea.
