As the holidays ended, and Alison and Clary returned back to the girls' dormitory, Mary could no longer stay in Snape's personal chambers at nights. Although Mary did find herself sleeping better in the cozy surroundings of Severus' room, Mary was glad to see her friends.
"Hi, Mary!" Clary greeted Mary, her blue-grey eyes sparkling with excitement. "How was your Christmas?"
Mary smiled warmly at her best friend and wrapped her arms around her, pulling Clary into her warm embrace.
"It was great, thanks for asking", Mary said, resting her chin on Clary's shoulder. "How about you two?" Mary added, a smirk spreading on her lisp as she pulled away and eyed the two Slytherin's standing in front of her. Alison and Clary exchanged mischievous looks, Clary blushing vigorously.
"I see", Mary teased. Alison rolled her eyes and plopped down on her bed.
"How about you, miss I'm-so-innocent-and-pure?", Alison asked, a knowing smirk spreading on her lips as Mary's faced turned into a shade of deep red.
"You didn't!" Clary gasped and jumped on Mary's bed, where the dark haired woman was sitting. Mary didn't say anything, but the way her gaze dropped to the ground told everything necessary.
"Oh my", Alison grinned. Her blue eyes sparkled, and Mary could only imagine what the young witch was now thinking.
For a couple of minutes, the girls stayed quiet, Mary and Clary blushing as Alison's eyes jumped from her girlfriend to Mary and back to Clary. Then, the raven-haired girl decided that it was time to break the awkward silence.
"Alright, Mary mingled with Professor Snape", she muttered, walking to Clary's bed and sitting down next to her. "It's done. Now we can move on."
Mary was surprised by the reaction the news caused on Clary and Alison. A while ago, Mary and Clary had a huge fight about Mary and Severus' relationship. Although being in a secret relationship with a professor was more than enough to cause a stir between students, but when it came to Mary and Clary, there was more. Because last year, Clary had been in love with Mary. But to Mary's understanding, Clary's feelings had subsided long ago, and Clary had even started a relationship with their mutual friend, Alison Murphy.
Mary's thoughts were interrupted as Clary sighed deeply, pressing her face with her hands as she nodded.
"Yeah, you're right", Clary admitted, her voice muffled by her hands. Alison, a gentle and understanding look in her deep blue eyes, placed her hand on Clary's shoulder and squeezed it as a sign of affection.
"You think we should go upstairs for dinner?" Alison suggested, leaning closer to Clary in order to see the young girls' eyes.
Clary didn't say anything but nodded slightly.

After the dinner, Alison and Mary had stayed behind as Clary had quickly made her way to the girls' dormitory. The dinner had been slightly awkward, and Mary couldn't ignore the murderous glares Clary shot at Snape whenever their eyes would meet.
"Um, Alison", Mary started, pulling the dark-haired woman into a private corner in the common room.
"It's not your fault", Alison said, as if she had read Mary's thought. Her green eyes widened slightly as she stared at Alison, her hand letting go of Alison's arm and dropping down to the side of her body.
"I, um... I didn't know it would cause such a reaction in Clary", Mary confessed, her voice seeping with guilt. Alison nodded in understanding, taking a deep breath before answering to Mary.
"I know", she started, her voice hushed as she continued to explain Clary's mixed emotions towards Mary. Mary listened in utter confusion, her eyes glancing towards the door of the girls' dormitory in order to make sure that the fair girl was still behind the closed doors.
When Alison was done speaking, Mary felt like her head was going to explode. She had thought that Clary's feelings were long gone and because of that, she had been rather careless whenever she would speak about her relationship with Severus.
"Shit", Mary muttered. Alison nodded sharply and placed her hand reassuringly on Mary's shoulder for a brief moment, before turning away and disappearing into the girls' dormitory.

On Monday, 6th of January, 1992, Mary, Clary and Alison entered the Great Hall for breakfast, readying themselves for the first day back studying. Today, Mary would be having a double-lesson of Transfiguration, which Mary hated, Herbology, Study of Ancient Runes and Divination.
"Can't believe it's 1992 already", Clary mused as she sat on her usual spot at the Slytherin table, grabbing herself a mug and pouring boiling hot coffee in it. Alison nodded in agreement, grabbed a piece of toast and started to smother butter on top of it.
"Yeah, you're right", Mary chimed in as she sat next to Clary, taking a quick glance at the High Table. Severus was there, just about to finish his breakfast, as he muttered about something with Professor Quirrel. But to Mary's surprise, it didn't seem like a normal conversation. It seemed like an argument.
What on earth is that about? Mary thought as she turned her attention back to her plate.
The trio finished their breakfast quickly. After taking the last sip of her coffee, Mary placed the mug on the table and started to gather her things. But what she didn't know was that Severus and Professor Quirrel were done with breakfast as well, and they had continued their argument as they had left the table. And so, Mary, unaware of the approaching Severus and Quirrel, and Severus, too caught up to notice Mary standing up from the table, collided as Mary took a step away from the table.
"Watch where you're going, you blind imbecile!" Severus, who hadn't realised who he had bumped into, roared.
"Oh shit sorry, Severus", Mary muttered. And just a quarter of a second too late she realised what she had done. She had called Severus by his first name in front of the whole school.
Severus, beyond himself with anger, stared at Mary. Then, he drew a sharp, shaky breath.
"DETENTION! ", he roared, catching the attention of the entire Great Hall. "Detention, Miss Montgomery!"
Mary stared at Severus in shock, unable to move an inch. For another second, Severus stared at Mary, before he brushed past her, his cloak waving as he marched out of the Great Hall.
