It was one of those nights when everything felt just right. The evening sky was painted in hues of purple and orange, and Mallory's mansion looked even more elegant with the soft glow of the lights shining through the large windows. The house was buzzing with excitement as the family prepared for dinner.
Max, Mallory, and Elliot were walking toward the front door, each feeling a mix of anticipation and nervousness. Mallory had invited Max, as usual, but this time she had casually mentioned to her parents that her new neighbor, Elliot, had been hanging out with them lately and was, in her words, "really cool."
Her parents agreed to invite him along for dinner, though they seemed a little skeptical at first. Mallory couldn't help but smile. Dinner with her family was always an event—a full course meal, extravagant and perfectly set on the table. It was one of those rare times she could feel "normal" again, despite her family's wealth.
As they entered the grand dining room, the scent of roast chicken, garlic bread, and freshly sautéed vegetables filled the air. The long, polished table was set with fine China, sparkling glasses, and gold-trimmed napkins, and Mallory couldn't help but feel a little out of place, despite being the one who lived there. It was always overwhelming when she had friends over, especially ones who didn't live in a mansion.
"Wow," Elliot murmured, his eyes wide as he glanced around. "This place is... incredible."
Mallory laughed nervously. "Yeah, it's kind of... a lot. My parents go all out for dinner. Just wait until you see the dessert—Mom's chocolate mousse is legendary."
Max, who was usually easygoing, looked a little out of his element as well, adjusting his suit jacket and trying to act casual. "Uh, yeah. I'm just here for the food," he said with a grin.
The three of them sat down at the table, with Mallory at the head, flanked by Max and Elliot. Her parents were already seated, and the meal started with laughter and casual conversation.
"So, Elliot," Mallory's dad, Mr. Smith, began, "how do you like the neighborhood so far?"
Elliot took a sip of his water and shrugged nonchalantly. "It's alright. I'm just getting used to things, you know?"
Mallory's mom, Ruby, smiled warmly. "I'm sure you'll get along just fine here. We're happy to have you. You're always welcome at our dinner table."
Dinner was a lively affair—plenty of stories, jokes, and shared laughs. Max and Elliot seemed to be getting along just fine, but Mallory couldn't shake the feeling that something was a little off. Maybe it was just the tension in the air, the awkwardness of having her two worlds collide: her life with Max, and her life with her family.
As the evening wore on, the conversation turned to more personal matters. Mallory's dad, James, leaned over to Elliot with a mischievous grin. "So, Elliot, you're the new guy in town. Got any fun hobbies? Or are you more of a... mysterious type?"
Elliot shrugged, a sly smile playing at his lips. "I guess you could say I like to keep things interesting."
Before Mallory could say anything, her mom stood up, clapping her hands. "Dessert time!"
They all followed her into the living room, where Mallory's mom had set up an impressive display of chocolate mousse, fresh fruit, and pastries. Everyone helped themselves, and for a few moments, it seemed like a perfect night. Max took a large helping of mousse, while Elliot seemed to favor the pastries. Mallory picked at her dessert, trying not to stare at Elliot as he seemed to enjoy everything just a little too much.
But just as Mallory was finishing her dessert, a cold shiver ran down her spine. She glanced at the glass coffee table in front of them, where her grandmother's antique locket had been resting—one of her most treasured items. It was gone. Vanished.
