Chapter 8: The Dinner and the Missing Item

Start from the beginning

"Hey, where's my locket?" Mallory asked, her voice suddenly tight with panic. She stood up, looking around the room.

Everyone stopped. Max, who had been chatting with Elliot, suddenly looked a little too nervous. Mallory's mom looked confused, while Mallory's dad frowned. "What do you mean, locket?" Ruby asked. "Was it on the table?"

Mallory's heart sank as she checked the area again. "It was right here... It's gone."

Her parents exchanged uneasy glances, but it was James who spoke up first. "I'm sure it'll turn up, sweetheart. But maybe you should retrace your steps..."

Max opened his mouth to speak, but Mallory cut him off. "No, I'm serious, I've always kept it here on this table. It's... my grandmother's. It can't just disappear."

Elliot, who had been quiet the whole time, stood up casually. "It's probably just misplaced. I mean, things like that tend to happen in places like this, don't they?"

Mallory stared at him, a feeling of unease creeping in. "You didn't... take it, did you?"

Elliot raised an eyebrow, a small smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Me? Why would I take your locket?" then she turned to max.

"Wait," Max said, his voice tense. "You think I took it?" He turned to Mallory. "Come on, I'm not the thief here. I told you, I'm not—"

Before he could continue, Mr. Brown, who had been standing near the doorway, stepped forward. "Is everything okay in here?"

"Mr. Brown," Mallory's mom said, her voice thick with concern, "Mallory's locket is missing."

"Oh," Mr. Brown said, looking down at the table and then at Max. His eyes narrowed. "Well, Max... you've been acting a little strange tonight. Are you sure you didn't... take it?"

The words hung in the air like a weight, and Mallory's stomach dropped. No. Max wouldn't do that. He couldn't.

But the looks on their faces—the way they seemed to side-eye Max—made Mallory question everything.

Max opened his mouth, but no one dared to speak the words they were all thinking.

After a tense few minutes of searching, everyone was on edge. The room seemed too quiet for what was supposed to be a fun evening. Mallory's heart raced as she scanned the area again, her eyes darting between the coffee table, the chairs, and the corners of the room. But the necklace was nowhere to be seen.

Max was pacing now, hands in his pockets, his nervous energy obvious. "I'm telling you, I didn't take it, Mallory," he said, voice slightly tight.

Elliot, however, was leaning back casually in his chair, swirling his drink as if he wasn't involved in any of it. Mallory couldn't stop herself from glancing at him, her heart fluttering. The way he acted, so smooth and calm, made him seem like he had everything under control. He gave her a reassuring smile, but something about his demeanor nagged at her.

"Are you sure it isn't somewhere else?" Mallory asked, trying to sound calm.

"Maybe you left it somewhere upstairs," her mom suggested, standing up. "Let's check your room again, sweetheart."

"Wait," Mr. Brown suddenly interjected, his voice cutting through the noise like a knife. "What's that under the table?"

Everyone stopped and turned to where Mr. Brown was pointing. Beneath the long, polished dining table, just barely visible in the dim light, was something shiny. Mallory's breath caught in her throat.

"There it is!" Mallory exclaimed, rushing over and reaching for it. As she pulled it out, her grandmother's locket glittered in the dim glow of the chandelier. She held it up, relief flooding her chest.

"That's it!" Mallory gasped, inspecting it to make sure it was indeed hers. "It's really back!"

The room collectively let out a sigh of relief, and a wave of gratitude seemed to wash over everyone. Mallory smiled and hugged the locket to her chest. "Thank you, whoever found it," she said, looking around. "You really saved my night."

Everyone's eyes shifted toward the table, and for a moment, everything felt normal again. The tension started to break. But as Mallory smiled, she couldn't ignore the uneasy feeling gnawing at her.

Max, who had been quiet during the whole search, looked hurt. His usual easygoing attitude had disappeared. He glanced at Mallory, but she noticed that his eyes were filled with something else now—disappointment. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything, Mr. Brown spoke up, his voice a little too sharp.

"That's... odd," Mr. Brown muttered, almost to himself. He looked at Elliot, his gaze lingering for a moment longer than necessary.

"Odd?" Mallory asked, her brow furrowing.

Mr. Brown cleared his throat. "Oh, never mind. Just thinking out loud. But I'm glad we found it."

Max seemed to stiffen at Mr. Brown's words, and Mallory could tell that Max had caught the subtle suspicion in the older man's voice. A heavy silence fell over the group.

Mallory didn't know what to think. Why had Mr. Brown looked at Elliot like that? It was almost as if he'd noticed something strange. But no one else seemed to mention it, and the conversation quickly shifted back to smiles and small talk.

Max finally broke the silence. "I'm... I'm sorry, Mallory. I know you were worried, and I shouldn't have gotten so defensive earlier. I never meant to make you feel like I would do something like that... take something from you. I just... I just don't like being accused of something I didn't do." His voice was quieter now, almost unsure.

Mallory immediately softened, walking over to him. "I'm sorry, too, Max. I should have trusted you. I just... I didn't know what to think. I should have believed you from the start." She gave him a small, sincere smile, and Max returned it, though his eyes still seemed distant.

The air in the room lightened, but Mallory couldn't ignore the nagging feeling in her chest. The way Mr. Brown had looked at Elliot—something was off. Still, she couldn't shake the pull she felt toward him. There was just something about him, something exciting and mysterious. She couldn't help herself.

As the group resumed talking, Mallory kept sneaking glances at Elliot, who was casually enjoying his dessert, completely unfazed by the tension. He caught her looking at him once and gave her a small, sly smile.

Mallory's heart fluttered again.

This sounds like a fun scene! Here's how the second day of Mr. Brown's stay could unfold with a little chaos, Ruby's grace under pressure, and some humor to keep it interesting.
