No matter how swift your steps, or how far you think you've outrun it, the demon always finds its way back. It lies in wait, hidden in the shadows of your past, patient and unyielding. And when the time comes to settle the score—when karma knocks at your door—it arrives. Without warning. No matter how you try to escape, it doesn't relent. It finds you. It faces you. And in that moment, there is nowhere to hide. It chases you, relentless and fierce, until you can no longer deny what you've been running from all along.
That's exactly how it felt when Sahil walked into my office. The air seemed to thicken with each step he took, his presence like a storm slowly gathering strength. And there it was—his devil's smile, creeping across his face like a dark promise. My heart skipped a beat, and I swear, my soul recoiled, trembling at the familiarity of it. That smile—it was a reminder of things better left buried, of mistakes and regrets that I'd hoped were far behind me. But here he was, like karma itself, standing in front of me, and for a brief moment, the room felt like a trap. A slow, creeping fear gnawed at my insides, knowing that whatever came next, I wouldn't be able to outrun it.
So I waited, for him to unleash his sarcastic deadly tongue or one those nasty creatures he holds close to his heart for me. I braced myself for it. Knowing well, today I had no one to save me or run to. I sat there on the chair, waiting to feel that silicone made stuff against my skin but also so ready to jump around like it's real.
One drunken mistake. This kanjar won't let me even get away with one fucking drunken mistake.
Where's my asshole husband so I can beat him to pulp for not stopping me from making that call that night?
"Don't you have a company to run?" I query, sliding away the laptop and deal with the devil of all devils for the time being.
"Unlike you, I have minions named Ahaana, Suhana and Advik to do that for me," he unbuttons the jacket before swiftly settling down on the chair opposite mine and stretching legs like the giraffe he is.
"Try saying that in front of the said minions and we'll talk." I snort.
"I can't. They are busy. Ahaana Suhana are with the Masterji today, Yug visiting the new location and Advik... hm.. he's out for lunch." That takes all my attention. "Lunch?" I'm pretty damn sure there was no plans of lunch outside today, Advik had especially requested the cook for Rajma today.
"Hm, Maya said she forgot to inform him that he had a lunch meeting with those Delhi clients of ours today." He waits for a bit, keeping his eyes on my face and I know he's trying to gauze my reaction. He adds, "They cancelled last minute so Advik and Maya--"
"Chhaya, the bitch's name is Chhaya asshole!" I growl which in turn only makes the glint in his eyes shine more.
"Whatever! They decided to have lunch there, saying they can't let go the money to waste." he shrugs, I narrow eyes at my husband's face in the photo frame on the table.
