Your POV:The sound of rain hitting the pond in-front of us sounded like hundreds of bubbles of bubble-wrap popping all at once yet out of sync. There was a long stretch of path in-front of us and field upon fields of greenery all around, Martha was sat upon the back-support of the cobbled stone bench smoking a ciggerate while I sat hunched over my head placed in my hands.
"Why've you been so silent?" Martha placed her hand on my back comfortingly. "You invite me out here and you haven't really been acting yourself, what's up?"
I lifted my head back up and thought about a way to explain, I let a sigh escape my lips as I explained about the events of this morning, I felt cruel after not talking to Martha for so long, if I recall the last time we had a proper conversation like this was the last day of our education. "Darren and I are not longer a thing..." my voice was low, I was still perplexed about the whole ordeal myself and I don't think that in this moment I had processed my emotions properly about it.
Martha's face snapped over and faced me, her eyes held pity. "Damn... you two have been a thing since school." She was thinking about the maths. "Four years down the drain." Martha's almond brown eyes widened after realizing this and then relaxed. "Well, we both knew this was gonna come, at-least he won't be taking advantage of your paycheque and gambling that away." She tried making me see the lighter side to it.
My range of disappointments didn't stop there however, after everything it seemed Lady Luck had completely abandoned me and I was being left to fend for myself. I let out another long sigh. "Now I have a bigger problem..."
Martha chucked the half-smoked cigarette in the pond and turned back to me to continue the conversation. "What do you mean?" She was paying closer attention now.
A laugh full of anger mixed with disappointment escaped my lips. "I won't be able to pay rent. I mean." I paused in thought and then I continued. "It was difficult then,.. But without another tenant, I'll most likely get evicted." I was pinching the bridge of my nose, overwhelmed with everything, I felt as though I was under so much pressure that I didn't know what to do.
There was a silence in the air, the only thing that could be heard was the calmness of bird-song circulating the area and the sound of water swishing around in the pond.
Martha finally began to speak. "Well, mum has been getting on my ass about moving out..." she started. "If you need another tenant I would totally be up for it! Like we spoke about moving in when we were younger we could totally make that a reality!"
I gave her a sad smile and looked up at her, the gratitude I had, and the newfound excitement of moving in with a friend was there, but I was obviously still burdened and upset about the recent events, I was completely lost in though I had forgot to respond.
"Y/n?" She spoke, grabbing my attention out of my own daydream. "Is that idea helpful?"
I quickly nodded. "Yeah... yeah... I'd love to room with you."
A month later:
Martha's POV:
I thought moving in with Y/n was going to be fun like it use to be when we use to hang out back in school, but she seems to have become a hermit. Sure she comes out of her room every now and then to cook and do the dishes and take the bins out and goes to work very often, but she tends to keep to herself nowadays.
I was sat in my room, the one that use to be Darren's office, it's a tiny box room, enough for a single bed and a dresser, but that's all I really need, I use to have a big PC setup back at my old place and nowadays I just stick to my laptop, all the walls in the flat are a creamy white colour and the floors are an oak wood.
