Laila kept her stance firm, heart pounding as Zayn’s words sank in.
"They’re coming for you, Raven. And this time… they won’t stop."
Her fingers twitched. “Who’s ‘they’?”
Zayn sighed, slipping his hands into his pockets like he had all the time in the world.
“The people we ran from. The people who wanted us dead.” He gave her a look. “Or did you think you were safe just because you disappeared?”
Laila clenched her jaw. “I didn’t disappear. I started over.”
Zayn chuckled, the sound low and amused. “Then why did I find you so easily?”
Her pulse spiked.
That was a good question.
Zayn leaned in slightly. “I wasn’t the only one tracking you, Raven. And the others? They don’t want to reminisce.”
Laila exhaled slowly, keeping her expression neutral. "Let them come."
Zayn shook his head, smirking. “Same old Laila. No fear. No backup plan.”
Backup plan?
A sharp beep made both of them freeze.
Laila’s pulse lurched.
Zayn’s gaze snapped to her wrist.
Laila glanced down.
Her smartwatch was flashing red.
A tracker alert.
Aziel was close.
Zayn’s expression darkened. “You brought company?”
Laila tensed. She didn’t.
Which meant—
Aziel tracked her.

Two Streets Away
Aziel’s car skidded to a halt.
He jumped out, scanning the empty street. Where was she?
His phone buzzed.
Tracker active.
He glanced at the map. She was close.
His jaw clenched. Of course, she was.
And she wasn’t alone.

Back in the Alley
Zayn stepped back. “You need to go. Now.”
Laila frowned. “What? No. You just said—”
Zayn grabbed her arm. “I said they’re coming. And if your little friend finds us first, we won’t have time to run.”
Laila stiffened.
Zayn didn’t know Aziel.
And Aziel didn’t know Zayn.
But something told her that once they met—
It wouldn’t end well.
Too late.
A low voice cut through the air.
“Step away from her.”
Laila’s breath hitched.
Zayn turned.
Aziel stood at the entrance of the alley, a gun in his hand.
And his gaze?
Locked on Zayn like a predator finding its target.
Laila swallowed.
This was about to go very, very wrong.
