The reports arrived late, delivered by my most trusted lieutenant. The news was unwelcome, a ripple in the carefully constructed calm of our operations. A rival family, the Morettis, were making moves, encroaching on territory we considered ours. Their tactics were clumsy, their attempts at intimidation amateurish, but the message was clear: they were testing our boundaries.

I studied the reports, my gaze scanning the details, searching for the underlying strategy. The Morettis were known for their impulsiveness, their lack of foresight. But this move, this blatant act of aggression, felt calculated, deliberate.

I summoned Alexei to my study, his face pale, his eyes wide with apprehension. He was a liability, a weakness, but he was family. And in our world, family was both a strength and a burden.

"The Morettis," I said, my voice flat, "they are making moves."

Alexei's eyes darted around the room, his gaze avoiding mine. "What kind of moves?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Territorial disputes," I replied. "Minor, for now. But they are testing us."

"What do we do?" he asked, his voice laced with fear.

"We respond," I said, my voice firm. "We show them that we will not tolerate their aggression."

"But...the risks," Alexei stammered. "A war with the Morettis..."

"There will be no war," I said, my voice cutting through his fear. "We will handle this swiftly, decisively. We will send a message they will not forget."

I dismissed him, his relief palpable. I turned back to the reports, my mind racing, calculating the necessary response. The Morettis were a nuisance, a distraction. But they could not be ignored.

My thoughts drifted to Isabella, to the way she had observed the family dinner, her eyes sharp, her expression thoughtful. She was intelligent, perceptive. She would sense the shift in the atmosphere, the growing tension.

I considered her safety, the potential risk she faced. The Morettis were unpredictable, their actions erratic. I could not afford to underestimate them.

I called for my head of security, issuing precise instructions. Isabella was to be protected, her movements monitored. The estate was to be fortified, the guards doubled.

I would not allow any harm to come to her. Not because I cared for her, not in the sentimental sense. But because she was mine. A possession. A symbol of my power. And I would not tolerate any challenge to my ownership.

The Morettis had made a mistake. They had underestimated the Volkovs. And they had inadvertently placed Isabella in the crosshairs of a conflict they did not understand. They would soon learn the price of their arrogance.
