The house was quiet when you walked in. Too quiet.

Usually, Billie would be playing music, humming along as she scrolled on her phone or played with the dogs. But today, the air felt heavy—like the silence had weight, pressing down on everything.

You set your keys down and walked cautiously toward the bedroom, your heart sinking a little when you saw the door cracked open.

Inside, Billie lay curled up on the bed, facing the wall. The curtains were drawn, leaving the room dim, and the only sound was the faint rustling of blankets as she shifted slightly.

She hadn't heard you come in.

"Hey, love," you said softly, stepping closer.

Billie didn't move.

You sat carefully on the edge of the bed, watching the slow rise and fall of her shoulders. "Billie?"

A long pause. Then, barely above a whisper—

"Hey."

Her voice was hoarse, as if she hadn't spoken in hours.

You reached out, brushing a few strands of hair away from her face. She looked exhausted. Her usually bright blue eyes were dull, rimmed with red, dark circles beneath them.

"How long have you been in bed?" you asked gently.

She shrugged. "Dunno. A while."

You glanced at the nightstand. The glass of water you had left for her that morning was untouched. So was the half-eaten granola bar from the night before.

Your chest tightened.

You knew Billie had been struggling. She had been off for the past few weeks—quieter, more distant. She still smiled at you, still kissed you goodnight, but there was something heavy behind it. Something she wasn't saying.

You shifted closer, lying down beside her. "Talk to me, B."

She let out a shaky breath. "I just... I feel like shit."

You reached for her hand, lacing your fingers through hers. "I'm here, baby. Always."

She squeezed your hand but didn't say anything.

For a while, you just lay there in silence, your thumb tracing soothing circles over the back of her hand. You didn't push her to talk—you knew better than that. Sometimes, Billie needed space. Sometimes, she just needed to exist beside you without feeling like she had to explain everything.

After a few minutes, she shifted, turning slightly so that her forehead pressed against your shoulder.

"I feel so... fucking stuck," she whispered.

You tightened your hold on her. "I know, love."

"It's like... I should be happy, right? I have everything. You, my family, my career... But my brain just won't let me be happy."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and your heart shattered.

You cupped her face, tilting her chin up so she had to look at you. "Billie, you don't have to justify feeling like this. Your feelings are valid, no matter what your life looks like from the outside."

She blinked rapidly, like she was trying to hold back tears. "I just... I don't know what's wrong with me."

You brushed your thumb over her cheek. "There's nothing wrong with you, baby. Your mind is just being a little bitch right now."

That got the tiniest ghost of a smile.

You kissed her forehead, lingering there. "You don't have to go through this alone, B. I'm right here. Always."

She let out a shaky breath and curled further into you, burying her face in your neck. You felt her body tremble, her breaths uneven. Then she sobbed.

She tried to hold it in, but it broke through, shaking her small frame. You held her tighter, running your fingers through her hair, murmuring soft reassurances.

"It's okay, baby. Let it out."

She did.

She cried against you, her hands clutching at your hoodie, her body shaking with silent sobs. You stayed there, holding her through it, rubbing her back, whispering over and over how much you loved her, how proud you were of her.

How she wasn't alone.

Minutes passed, and slowly, her cries softened. Her breathing evened out.

You kissed the top of her head. "Do you want to stay in bed for a while longer, or do you wanna get up for a bit? Maybe eat something?"

She hesitated. Then, in a small voice, "Can we just stay like this a little longer?"

You smiled softly, pressing another kiss into her hair. "Of course, baby. As long as you need."

And so, you held her.

And when she fell asleep in your arms, finally finding a little bit of peace, you stayed awake, watching over her.

Because you weren't going anywhere.

Not now. Not ever.
