"So can you unlock my memories?"
The temple ruins loomed behind us in the shadow of the forest, as I sat cross-legged beside the fire pit. The earth was cold, and the morning mist was damp against my jacket.
But it didn't bother me. My attention was locked on Chase, who knelt on the other side of the fire pit, his face shadowed by his hood. His silver eyes, like mine, glowed like the moon.
If I was unrelated to my parents, why did I look like Chase? And had silver eyed powers. The thought briefly crossed my mind.
Chase was taking his time to answer me. He hadn't said a word since I made my request. Instead he focused his attention on the fire pit, arranging the kindling and stacking logs in a pyramid.
He struck a match and the small flame flickered, catching on the dry wood. Chase cupped his hands around it, coaxing the fire to grow. A second later, the soft crackle of burning wood filled the silence.
I could feel his hesitation, thick and oppressive, but I waited.
"I can't help you regain the memories of your past life." His gaze didn't meet mine, fixed instead on the fire. "Clairvoyance doesn't work that way. I can only read your present life."
"So you can only see the past, present and future of my current life?"
"Possible futures, the actions you cause in the present can change the direction of your future, but yes." Chase nodded. "I can see everything."
I leaned back, exhaling a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding. Disappointment settled in my chest, but I pushed it aside.
If Chase said it wasn't possible, I believed him. Still, the nagging ache of unanswered questions about who I was—what I used to be—didn't go away.
"You don't seem surprised by the fact that I have a past life." I crossed my arms. "How long have you known?"
"Since I first developed these powers. I have always sensed that your wolf's spirit is old, it's why you have never liked me reading you. It's not that you don't like it, but that your wolf doesn't like me prying on him." His eyes narrowed as his gaze focused harder on the growing fire.
"Right..." I swallowed nervously. "And Lucius?"
"I know his real name is Lucius Novak, that he was once the General Wolf to the Lunar Goddess and that he killed the Wolf King. Since I first met him, I've known that he was your fated mate. I know about Sebastian and what he did to you, I know who Selina is, and I know about the prophecy. I know and see everything Nate. It's a bit of a headache."
He tapped his temple.
"I can only imagine." I took in Chase's appearance, he was eighteen, but his eyes had seen lifetimes, ancient and old. "Why didn't you say anything?"
His eyes finally landed on mine and I startled back from his intense stare that had seen a thousand lifetimes and looked as if it was filled with conflicting emotions.
"I have wanted to tell you everything, and there is so much more you need to know, but I'm not supposed to interfere with fate, merely gently guide you in the correct direction."
"Fine, whatever!" I shook my head in annoyance. "What about the night Hayley was killed?" I asked, my voice quieter this time. "That night is a blur. I can't remember anything. Can you at least help me uncover those memories?"
Chase's fingers stilled, his hand lingering near the edge of the flames. For a moment, I thought he might refuse, but then he nodded slowly.
"Maybe." He sat back on his heels, his expression unreadable. "But it'll be difficult. I'd have to enter your mind to find the missing memory, and that's... tricky. The mind doesn't like intruders, even when the person wants to remember. It fights back."
