The narrow lane wound through a dense, otherworldly forest, where towering trees stretched upward like ancient sentinels. Their bark shimmered faintly, silver threads running through their trunks as if infused with starlight. Above, the canopy formed a patchwork of leaves, glowing faintly in hues of blue and green, casting an ethereal light on the path below. The air was cool and heavy with the earthy aroma of moss and damp soil, mingled with the faint, sweet scent of blossoms hidden among the undergrowth.
Gaia led the group forward, her movements confident and deliberate, as though she had walked this path a thousand times. Behind her trailed the rest of the group: Marmo, the blind DJ whose ears twitched at every faint rustle; Cleo, her footsteps heavy yet careful; Zaob, encased in a shimmering, translucent bubble that hovered effortlessly; Sierra, with her ever-curious gaze darting about the scenery; Codi, Von, Lebal, and Dominic, their expressions ranging from wonder to unease.
As they walked, Gaia's voice rose, clear and steady, cutting through the tranquil hum of the forest. "The first land we're going to is called the Land of Dwarfs," she said. "But I should warn you—what you think of as dwarfs might not align with what they truly are."
Sierra glanced up from a patch of luminous mushrooms she had been studying, her curiosity piqued. "What exactly are you talking about?"
Gaia smiled cryptically, her expression unreadable. "It's something better shown than told."
Von, unable to contain his excitement, gestured animatedly. "This is incredible! I've spent years making content about mythical creatures, and now here I am, walking among them!" His expression faltered briefly, his hands clenching as the memory of his transformation into his half-demon form bubbled up. It was a cruel irony—after years of obsession with the supernatural, he had discovered he was part of it all along.
"It's insane," he thought bitterly. "I've always been half something else, and I never even knew."
Gaia's voice broke through his thoughts. "The journey to the Land of Dwarfs will take approximately three days," she explained. "We'll need to find a campsite along the way. Everyone will have a role: firewood gathering, food foraging, scavenging for tools, surveying the area for predators, and someone to stay back and guard the camp."
Von blinked, her words pulling him back to reality. "Predators?" he asked, his voice cracking slightly.
Gaia chuckled, the sound soft and reassuring. "Yes, predators. But don't worry. I'll stay back to watch the camp and keep an eye on Zaob."
Codi raised an eyebrow, her suspicion evident. "Why exactly are you so attached to Zaob?"
Gaia glanced back at the bubble encasing Zaob, her hand brushing lightly against its surface. The bubble shimmered in response, refracting the faint bioluminescence of the surrounding forest. "Zaob is fae," she said simply.
The group stopped dead in their tracks.
"What?!" they exclaimed in unison.
Codi shook her head, incredulous. "There's no way. I lived with Zaob in the streamer house for three years and never suspected a thing. Then again," she added with a shrug, "I didn't know I was half succubus either."
