A few days later

Katherine's POV

I needed to get out. No more waiting. No more games. My muscles tensed, every fiber of my being screaming for action. My mind was sharpened by the pain, the hallucinations, the torment- they wanted me broken. They would get the opposite.

The moment the guard stepped closer, extending the glass of water toward me, I struck. With every ounce of strength I had, I swung my leg up, smashing my foot into his wrist. The glass flew from his grip, shattering against the floor in an explosion of sharp, jagged fragments. He cursed and stumbled back, but I didn't stop. My leg snapped out again, this time slamming into his ribs, making him grunt in pain as he staggered.

'You little bitch!' he snarled, reaching for me, his face twisted in fury.

I watched him warily, knowing my opening had come. He turned slightly, reaching down to sweep the broken glass aside with his boot to avoid stepping on it. That's when I moved. With a slow, deliberate motion, I dragged the inside of my foot across the floor, securing a single, lethal shard of glass, hiding it just behind me.

The bastard's patience snapped. He lunged at me and struck- his fist crashed into my jaw, sending a fresh wave of pain through my skull. My vision blurred, but I clenched my teeth to keep from crying out. Then came the sting of another injection, the sharp prick of the needle piercing my skin.

'Sweet dreams,' he sneered before turning away.

I slumped forward, pretending to be weaker than I was. The second I heard the heavy metal door close behind him, I let my body collapse to the side, landing hard on the cold floor. The glass shard pressed into my ankle, but I ignored it. Pain didn't matter. Survival did.

Twisting my body, I maneuvered my bound hands toward the sliver of glass. The jagged edge bit into my skin as I gripped it, blood slicking my fingers as I began the painstaking task of sawing through the thick ropes. Every movement sent fresh fire through my wrists, but I kept going, biting back every sound of agony.

Finally, the rope gave way. My hands were free.

I sucked in a breath and flexed my sore fingers, then wiped the sweat and blood from my brow.

Time to move.

I pressed myself against the darkest part of the room, vanishing into the shadows. My breathing was slow, controlled. Every second counted. My heartbeat drummed in my ears, but I forced myself to remain still. I knew the routine by now- the guard would return, check on me, and then... well, that was when things would get messy.

'Brutal,' a voice murmured beside me.

Stevenson.

I didn't even look at him. 'Shut up,' I hissed under my breath.

He only chuckled, his phantom form leaning against the wall. 'Getting a little nostalgic, aren't we? That look in your eye... that's the old you creeping back in.'

I ignored him, every nerve in my body attuned to the sound of approaching footsteps outside the door.

The lock clicked. The door creaked open.

Showtime.

The guard took a single step inside before I struck, lunging from the darkness like a shadow given form. My arm snaked around his throat, yanking him back. He gurgled, thrashing as his fingers clawed at my grip, but I was merciless. My other hand shot up, driving the shard of glass deep across his throat.
