Batgirl lay trembling on the cold ground, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps as she stared at the creature before her. The small, writhing thing—slick with the black fluid that had poured from her—tilted its elongated head, observing her with eerie awareness.
It was unlike any Xenomorph she had ever seen. Its body was still developing, its chitinous exoskeleton soft and pliant, but its features—there was something human in them. The way it moved, the way it clutched at the damp air, the way its dark, pupil-less eyes locked onto her like it knew her.
Batgirl shuddered, her limbs numb as exhaustion set in. Her body still felt heavy, hollow, as if something vital had been taken from her. But she wasn't dead. It hadn't ripped its way free like the monstrous abominations from the reports.
It had come into the world... gently.
The creature let out a soft, warbling hiss—a sound that sent a chill down her spine. Its tiny clawed hands flexed, then reached toward her. Not in attack. Not in hunger.
In recognition.
Her breath hitched. Was it imprinting on her? Did it see her as its mother?
A sickening mix of fear and fascination churned inside her. This thing should not exist, yet it did. And now, as it slithered closer, its black, glistening body pressing against her trembling form, she realized something even more terrifying.
She had a choice.
She could destroy it now—use what little strength she had left to end whatever nightmare had been set into motion.
Or...
She could let it live.
The creature cooed, nuzzling against her, its razor-sharp teeth barely missing the torn fabric of her suit. Batgirl let out a shaky breath, frozen in place.
Somewhere in the distance, sirens wailed, the neon glow of Gotham flickering against the alley walls.
She had minutes before she was found.
And the decision she made now would change everything.
Batgirl's hands trembled as she reached forward, hesitating just inches away from the creature. The thing—her child—let out another soft, warbling hiss, its small, clawed fingers twitching as it pressed closer to her.
Her breath hitched. Every instinct screamed at her to reject it, to see it as the abomination it was. But as she stared at its strange, unsettling form, she saw something else—something beyond the horror.
It was alive. And it was hers.
With a deep, shuddering breath, Batgirl scooped the creature into her arms. Its slick, black body molded against her chest, tiny claws grasping at her skin. She expected it to snarl, to lash out, but instead, it curled into her embrace, pressing its strange, elongated head against her collarbone.
A lump formed in her throat. She shouldn't do this. She should not do this.
But she did.
Leaning down, she pressed her lips to its smooth, cool forehead. A kiss—hesitant, fragile, but real.
Her decision was made.
Ignoring the sharp chill of the night and the tattered remnants of her suit barely hanging onto her, she rose unsteadily to her feet. Her child—her unnatural, impossible child—clung to her, making soft, alien cooing sounds that sent shivers down her spine.
The sirens in the distance grew louder.
She didn't have time.
Without another thought, Batgirl turned and melted into the shadows of Gotham, disappearing into the darkness, her child nestled in her arms.
She didn't know where she was going. She didn't know what she was anymore.
All she knew was that she would keep her child safe.
No matter what.
