Chapter 11

"Are you sure I look okay, Mel?" I asked, feeling a bit exposed in the dress she was lending to me.

Lots of tassels, not enough fabric around the arms and neckline. On the one hand, I felt nervous, exposed, and wanted a shawl or something similar to cover up. On the other hand, however, it felt freeing, and I myself felt attractive; felt dangerous.

Felt desirable.

"Okay? You look absolutely stunning, (Y/N)!" my friend exclaimed, brushing a stray strand of hair out of my face. "That color really brings out your eyes. He'll love it."

I met her gaze. "You really think so?"

She nodded enthusiastically. "Oh (Y/N), honey, I know so!"

I smiled timidly at her, examining myself in the mirror. The dress she had graciously lent me was a (Y/F/C) color, and really did do wonders in bringing out the (E/C) hues in my eyes. Melody had also helped me with my makeup, and I honestly found myself smiling at the reflection of the girl— no, the woman — staring back at me. She seemed much more confident, ready to step into this new life that she had found herself in. Ready to put the senseless, useless searching for a cure behind her and simply enjoy the time she had left with the people she loved most.

And maybe, in time, she could convince me of all of that, too.

For now, I would still have to struggle with the desire to figure out... Myself. I had to be sure there was absolutely nothing I could do, that there was no way to break the curse.

Until then, I believed I owed it to myself to continue fighting; continue searching.

Breaking free of the gaze of my mirror counterpart, I turned to Melody.

"Thank you so much for helping me, tonight, Melody. I can't express to you how much you've really helped me settle into my new life here, and how much you help calm my anxious spirit."

She beamed at me, bringing me in close for a tight hug. "Oh, (Y/N), I'm always happy to help you out. You've become a fast friend, and I'm absolutely jazzed that you spun into my life when you did."

After the two of us had embraced for a moment, we heard the sound of a car horn coming from outside the house. I looked at Melody, grinning nervously.

"I guess that's my cue," I said, smoothing out my dress and straightening up. I grabbed my purse and followed my friend out of my room and into the hall.

"I'm going out now, Auntie Romelda!" I called into the openness of the house.

"Alright, (Y/N), we'll see you soon! Be back before ten o'clock!"

I turned to Melody and smiled. "Thanks again, Mel."

She gave my arm a brief squeeze. "Don't mention it. Now go on, he's waiting for ya."

I stepped out of the house, closing the door behind me. I spotted the cab and Lawrence leaning against the side of it, perking up when his eyes lit on me. He was dressed in a dress shirt, suspenders, striped pants, and a jacket over the top. He had cleaned up very nice, which was a contrast to the disheveled state he was usually in after a run. His hair was swept back from his forehead, a few pieces straying and falling back into his face.

I smiled down at him, coming down the steps. He grinned back at me and met me halfway, offering his hand to me for the last few steps.

"You look absolutely beautiful, (Y/N)," he said to me, smile never leaving his face as he looked down at me.

I blushed a bit and ducked my head as he opened the door for me.

"Thank you, Law. You look very nice, yourself."

I slid into the car, my date right behind me. He shut the door after the both of us were safely in. The cab slowly pulled away from the curb, and we were soon on our way to wherever it was Lawrence had planned for us to go for the evening.

We arrived at a large, sprawling park on the outskirts of the city. There were lanterns lit along the paths and sidewalks, giving the area a warm, welcoming glow as the sun cast its last rays across the sky. I took it all in, eyes lighting up.

"Law, this is beautiful!" I gasped, grinning up at him in glee.

He gave me an almost sheepish smile. "Come on, let's walk a bit. Then I've got a surprise to show you."

I considered him as we began our easy stroll under the lamps, his hand gently finding my own and twining our fingers together. I felt my insides go warm and my heard stutter for a brief second. I enjoyed that warm feeling so much; it was unlike any I had ever felt before. Nothing like the little butterflies I would get at silly crushes in my girlhood years. No, this was something far more serious—and dangerous—than that.

I wondered if it could be love.

Before I drove myself crazy trying to overanalyze my relationship and feelings for Lawrence any further, he led me over to a grassy area of the park. There were several other couples lounging on blankets on the ground, and I noticed a man dimming all the lamps around the area, until it was nearly pitch.

Lawrence and I sat on our own blanket, and I looked over at him curiously.

"What is all this?"

He smiled over at me gently.

"I was talking to Mel, and she told me how much you missed seeing the stars. So, I wanted to bring you back the stars, if only for a little while."

I blinked at him, overwhelmed with emotion. Just as I opened my mouth to speak, we heard several gasps around us. Law pointed up at the sky, a grin on his face. I followed his gaze, and streaking across the night were hundreds of meteors, their backdrop the glittering of a thousand stars. I stared up in wonder, almost feeling the wind of the bluff on my face; the spray of sea mist on my skin. My hungry eyes drank in the sight, relishing every moment of the brilliant shower. I felt Law's hand take mine, and I wrapped my fingers around his instinctively.

Too soon, the shower was over, and I was back down on the earth. I looked over at Lawrence, overcome with emotion. This date was so deeply thoughtful and personal on a level not many other people had cared to know about me. It truly meant the world to my fragile, homesick heart.

"Lawrence, I can't thank you enough for this."

"No thanks necessary. I'm just happy I could bring a smile to that gorgeous face."

I met his large, green eyes and smiled, feeling as if I were going to burst with happiness.

He leaned in, catching my lips with his. I was surprised, but quickly wrapped my arms around his neck, falling into the embrace with him.

And in that moment, even though I was uncertain about many things, one thing I was certain of was this. This moment with this man. This man I was sure I loved. The thought both scared me and gave me a rush I couldn't quite describe.

Whatever that feeling was, it didn't matter in the moment. Nothing mattered except for Lawrence.

We finally drew apart after what felt like an eternity. I met his gaze again, his eyes searching my own.

"I think I'm falling in love with you."

I blinked at him, a bit taken aback by his sudden confession.

"I... I think I'm in love with you, too."

We embraced again, getting lost in each other under the dazzling expanse.
