...Sonic. Standing there, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, looking almost nervous. The usually confident and carefree hero shifted on his feet, his ears twitching when he noticed the red flash of Shadow's Chaos Control. Their eyes met. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The world around them—Amy's café glowing warmly in the distance, the distant chatter of people enjoying their Valentine's evening—faded into the background.

Shadow tightened his grip on the small Sonic plush, his mind racing. Was Sonic really the one behind this? He thought about the note, the carefully wrapped gift, the smell of lavender. It all seemed so... thoughtful.

Sonic exhaled, rubbing the back of his head with a sheepish chuckle. "Uh... surprise?" he said, his voice light but with an underlying nervousness.

Shadow crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "You're the one who wrote that letter?" His voice was calm, but Sonic could tell there was something else beneath it. Something searching.

Sonic hesitated, then gave a small nod. "Yeah. I, uh... I didn't really know how else to say it. Figured if I just told you straight up, you'd... I dunno, brush it off or something."

Shadow's quills bristled slightly. "And you thought sneaking a note into my book and leaving a plushie at my door was a better approach?"

Sonic grinned, though there was a hint of shyness to it. "Well, you're here, aren't you?"

Shadow clicked his tongue but didn't argue. He was here. He hadn't ignored the letter, hadn't dismissed it as a prank or a mistake. He wanted to know the truth. And now, standing here, seeing Sonic so uncharacteristically nervous, so serious beneath that usual easygoing attitude... Shadow found himself feeling something unexpected.

Warmth.

He let out a slow breath. "So," he finally said, glancing down at the plushie still in his hand. "What exactly do you expect from this, Sonic?"

Sonic's ears flicked, and for a moment, his expression softened. "I dunno. Just... to tell you how I feel. And maybe see if—" He paused, taking a step closer, just enough for Shadow to catch the faint scent of the cool night air on his fur. "—if there's even a small chance you might feel the same way."

Shadow didn't answer immediately. His heart was beating a little faster than usual, though he refused to show it. This was unexpected. Unfamiliar. But as he looked into Sonic's bright green eyes, full of hope but also a bit of uncertainty, he realized something.

Maybe this wasn't so bad. Maybe, just maybe... this Valentine's Day wasn't as meaningless as he thought.

A slow smirk formed on his lips. "You really are a fool, aren't you?"

Sonic let out a breathy laugh. "Yeah, but maybe I'm your fool?"

Shadow rolled his eyes but didn't deny it. "Tch. We'll see."

Sonic's grin widened, but there was still a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. Shadow held his gaze for a moment longer before sighing, shaking his head slightly. "Fine. You went through all this trouble, so... what now?"

Sonic's ears perked up. "Wait, really?" He blinked as if he hadn't actually expected Shadow to entertain the idea. "I mean, I was kinda expecting you to just—"

"Walk away? Call you an idiot and leave?" Shadow arched a brow.

"Yeah, pretty much."

Shadow huffed. "I considered it." He wasn't lying. A part of him had, for a brief second, thought about turning his back on all this. But... he didn't. He couldn't. The letter, the plushie, Sonic's nervous energy—it all gnawed at something deep inside him.
