Chapter 11: The First Look

But his gray eyes were focused on one thing.

Me.

I inhaled sharply, feeling Ezra's gaze flicker between us before muttering, "Well, well. He actually showed."

Roman ignored him.

Instead, he walked toward me, his eyes briefly flickering to my belly before settling back on my face.

"Raven," he said, his voice lower than usual.

I swallowed. "You came."

Roman exhaled, slipping his hands into his coat pockets. "I said I would."

Ezra leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms behind his head. "Well, look at that. The Ice King does keep his word."

Roman didn't rise to the bait. He just turned his attention back to me. "Are you ready?"

I wasn't.

Not for this. Not for him seeing our baby for the first time.

But I nodded anyway.

The Ultrasound Room

The room was quiet except for the soft hum of the machine as the ultrasound tech got everything set up.

I lay back on the chair, Ezra on my right, Roman standing stiffly to my left.

The tension in the air was thick.

Then the tech squeezed the cold gel onto my stomach, pressing the transducer gently against my skin.

And just like that—there they were.

My baby.

The screen flickered to life, displaying the small, growing life inside me.

My heart clenched. I reached for Ezra's hand, gripping it tightly.

Roman, however, hadn't moved.

His eyes were locked onto the screen, his lips slightly parted, his entire body frozen in place.

I could see it—the moment everything hit him at once.

He wasn't just a billionaire CEO right now.

He wasn't just Roman Riles, business mogul, untouchable and controlled.

He was a man seeing his child for the first time.

And he was in awe.

The tech pointed at the screen, explaining the baby's position, their heartbeat, their little movements.

Roman didn't say a word.

He just stared, completely mesmerized.

Finally, after what felt like forever, he inhaled.

"That's..." His voice trailed off.

Ezra, ever the opportunist, grinned. "That's yours, buddy."

Roman shot him a glare, but there was no real fire behind it.

He couldn't look away from the screen.

I turned my head slightly, watching him. His usual rigid, controlled expression was gone.

Instead, I saw something I never expected.

Wonder.

And just like that, I knew—this was real for him now.

No more denial. No more excuses.

For the first time since I told him I was pregnant...

Roman finally understood.

After the Appointment

We stepped out of the office, the cold air hitting me as I wrapped my coat around my body.

Ezra clapped his hands together, rocking on his heels. "Well, that was fun. I'd rate it a ten out of ten ultrasound experience."

I laughed softly, shaking my head. "Ezra."

Roman, however, was still silent.

I glanced at him. His hands were shoved in his coat pockets, his expression unreadable.

I exhaled. "Roman?"

His eyes flickered to mine.

"I—" He hesitated.

Ezra tilted his head, smirking. "He's speechless. This is a first."

Roman shot him a warning look, but Ezra just shrugged.

"Look," Ezra said, crossing his arms. "I'm gonna let you two have a moment. But just know, Roman—if you mess this up?"

He patted his shoulder hard.

"I'm still the favorite uncle."

Then he winked at me before walking off, whistling.

Silence stretched between Roman and me.

Finally, he spoke.

"That was..." He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling. "That was a lot."

I studied him. "Are you okay?"

He blinked, like he wasn't sure how to answer that.

Finally, he said, "I don't know."

Honest.

Raw.

For the first time, Roman Riles didn't have an answer for something.

I nodded slowly. "Well... that makes two of us."

A small, almost self-deprecating smile tugged at his lips.

We stood there for a moment, just taking it in.

And for the first time since this all started...

I didn't feel like I was facing it alone anymore.
