Chapter 5: Past Dawdling

Start from the beginning

I looked back at it now and realised Martha although she's a good friend she always had a tendency to lie, even if it was for no reason, that girl use to lie for the sake of lying.

"I'm actually offended you'd even accuse me of that." She grumbled. "Talk about overreaction." Martha finished.

Guilt was all I could process in that moment. Perhaps I was being immature to jump to such a big conclusion that Martha (who I had known and been closer with in school) was trying to steal my ex, perhaps this was her intention to make me feel terrible that way I wouldn't take it out on her? Or perhaps I really was overreacting that night and I should've just told Martha about how it made me feel that night to see her with him.

Flashback:

Martha and I were sat on a bench on top of the biggest hill in our tiny town, alongside us was Darren. At this point me and Darren weren't even dating and he forced himself into a trio with me and Martha not taking no for an answer.

While we were looking down at the heights we had a heartfelt moment of conversation.

Martha was talking about her boyfriend that she had had at the time.

"Men are so difficult."

I immediately grew concerned when she said this. "What do you mean?" I asked her.

"To buy for! Like- what are you suppose to buy a guy!?" She huffed. "What do men even enjoy?"

I shrugged. "I dunno about you, but I appreciate flowers."

"I don't think a man would necessarily enjoy flowers though." Martha sighed.

"I think what Martha needs is advice from me." Darren intruded, pointing to himself. "Martha, what kind of stuff does your boyfriend like?

Martha gave him a deadpanned look. "If I knew I would probably not be struggling."

"He's your boyfriend, how do you not have a single idea?" I was skeptical.

Darren piped up again. "People actually pay attention to that stuff? I just go with gender stereotype gifts. Birthdays aren't that important, just get him a pair of socks."

"No!" I argued back. "Why would you get your partner socks for their birthday?"

"What would you get him Y/n?" Martha asked, hoping for a good answer this time.

"Get him candles. Every guy secretly loves scented candles." I chuckled.

"Candles? That's... an interesting one." Martha was in thought. "If it fails I'll just tell him you told me to get candles."

"But then you look bad..?" There was an awkward prolonged stare between us, until I opened my mouth again to speak. "Do you even love him?"

She playfully swatted me on the shoulder and then spoke. "It's just time passing."

Darren seemed to be chuckling about my question as if it were stupid to even ask.

"Why are you with him? You're just wasting his time."

"Have you seen the other men at this school?" She turns to Darren. "No offence."

"I mean yeah I have." I glanced from Darren back to Martha. "I just don't think you should be playing around with someone who you don't love."

"Are you just jealous?" Darren teased.

"No!"

"What's love for you Y/n?" Martha asked.

"Not playing with someone's emotions is a start... loyalty? Perhaps a relationship close to friendship?"

Martha scoffed, chuckling at my answer.
