"I- what?" Ratchet scoffed, taken aback.
Instead of answering, she smirked and transformed back into her lioness form. With a low, playful rumble, she padded forward and started sniffing at him, her metallic nose brushing against his armor.
Ratchet froze.
"Primus above, what are you doing?!" he sputtered, raising his servos like a human trying to ward off a too-friendly animal.
"Checking you out," Y/n replied nonchalantly. "Gotta make sure you're not secretly dangerous."
Ratchet made a noise somewhere between a groan and a static-filled grumble. "I assure you, I am not a threat."
Y/n huffed, looking up at him. "Good. Then I won't have a problem with you."
Ratchet hesitated before lowering his servos. He eyed her carefully. She was still standing awfully close for his liking. He sighed and reached out. With only a hint of reluctance, he patted her head. "Just as long as you don't pounce me again.. then I won't have a problem with you either."
Y/n blinked, ears twitching slightly at the unexpected gesture. "...Did you just pet me?"
Ratchet immediately retracted his servo. "I- No! I was- Primus, I don't know what I was doing!" He scowled. "You're the one sniffing me!"
Y/n chuckled. "Fair point."
They stood in companionable silence for a moment, the jungle sounds filling the air around them.
"So, what now?" Ratchet finally asked.
Y/n sat down, curling her tail around her paws. "I'm just... laying low. For now. Until I figure out what I want to do."
Ratchet hummed. "You're not in hiding, then?"
"Not really. More like waiting for the right time to not be alone anymore."
Ratchet considered her words. He had spent mega-cycles keeping to himself, focused on his work, on survival. He understood what it meant to not belong, even among those who claimed to be on the same side.
Maybe that was why he didn't see her as an enemy.
A sudden rustling made Y/n's audials perk up. She lifted her helm slightly, listening intently.
"What is it?" Ratchet asked, optics narrowing.
She tilted her head. "Your friends. They're looking for you."
Ratchet stiffened. "Wait, what?"
Y/n transformed back into her bot form, arms crossed as she smirked. "I was following them. Wasn't sure why. Guess I needed to talk to you first."
Ratchet ex-vented, rubbing his helm. "Of course."
Y/n's expression softened. "You should go. I'll be fine out here."
Ratchet hesitated. "And what am I supposed to tell them?"
She gave him a pointed look. "Nothing."
Ratchet stared at her, then sighed heavily. "You're serious?"
She grinned. "If you like your sanity, yeah. Just tell them you got lost."
Ratchet muttered something under his breath, but relented. "Fine. But don't think this means I won't be keeping an optic on that energy signature of yours."
"I wouldn't expect anything less, Doc."
Ratchet scoffed again at the name, but gave her one last look before turning toward the direction of his team. As he walked away, Y/n watched, a knowing glint in her optics.
Ratchet trudged through the thick underbrush, his servos flexing absently at his sides. The weight in his spark felt heavier than before. He had no logical reason to feel this way- it wasn't as if he had known Y/n for long- but in their short interaction, he had marveled at her.
She was unlike any Cybertronian he had ever encountered. Unaffiliated. Independent. Strong.
And now, he had to leave, pretending she didn't exist.
He vented deeply, shaking off the feeling as the distant voices of his team cut through the sounds of the forest.
"Ratchet? Ratchet!"
The unmistakable voice of Arcee carried through the trees, followed by the sound of rustling leaves and snapping branches.
"I'm here!" he called, quickening his pace.
A moment later, he stepped into a small clearing where the rest of Team Prime stood, optics immediately locking onto him.
"There you are!" Bulkhead ex-vented in relief, crossing his arms. "You had us worried, Doc."
Optimus took a step forward, "We lost contact with you. What happened?"
Ratchet hesitated for only a fraction of a second before straightening his frame. "I... got lost."
Arcee frowned. "Seriously? You? The one who complains that we always get lost?"
Ratchet huffed. "Yes, me. The forest is dense, my comms were down, and.. I had to rely on my own navigation. I finally picked up the faint energy signature again, but by the time I got close, it was gone. Completely."
"So, nothing?" Bumblebee beeped, tilting his helm.
"Nothing," Ratchet confirmed, shaking his helm. "I'd say it was a malfunction in our scanners."
Arcee still didn't look convinced. "We've been tracking that signature for hours, Ratchet. You're saying it was just a malfunction?"
Ratchet crossed his arms. "Unless you'd like to stay out here all night trying to find something that clearly doesn't want to be found, I suggest we move on."
Optimus studied Ratchet carefully. The medic's explanation was logical- but there was something off about the way he spoke. A hesitation buried beneath his usual exasperation.
Still, Optimus nodded. "If the energy source is no longer present, then we have no reason to remain here."
Ratchet felt his frame relax just slightly.
Bulkhead clapped his servos together. "Alright then, let's get back. I'm getting weird vibes from this place."
Arcee sighed. "Fine. But if this signature pops up again, I'm leading the search."
Ratchet rolled his optics. "Yes, yes, whatever makes you feel better."
Optimus activated his comm. "Optimus to base, we are ready for a ground bridge."
Within seconds, the familiar swirling vortex of the bridge appeared before them, casting an eerie green glow against the organic life of the forest. One by one, the Autobots stepped through.
Ratchet lingered at the edge.
Something made him turn back.
The jungle was dark, but not empty.
There- in the shadows between the trees- two glowing blue optics watched him. The faint outline of a massive feline form was just barely visible.
She was still there.
Watching.
Neither of them moved.
Then, ever so slightly, Ratchet smiled.
With a final look, he turned and stepped into the ground bridge, vanishing into the light.
And deep in the jungle, Y/n remained in the shadows, watching as the last trace of his presence disappeared.
She smiled to herself.
They would meet again.
She was sure of it.

If y'all would like a part 3, let me know! How should they meet again? Does he visit her every now and then? Will Ratchet introduce her to Team Prime? -and how? Does he call her for back up later on? Hmm..
