Shadows of a Broken Future

Chapter 9

I sigh sitting in front of Onyx and pull my phone from my quills, quickly calling Tails. He picks up on the third ring, his voice light, despite the clanking sounds in the background.

"Hey Sonic! What's up?"

I smile. "Hey buddy! I need your advice on something."

"Of course! I'm always here for you!"

"Well you see I've been having these weird feelings towards Shadow recently..." I start, scratching the back of my head nervously. I don't know how to really explain it.

"About Shadow?" He questions, and I hear a mint can being opened before some crunching.

"Yeah, I dunno, when he's really close to me I get all nervous and feel kinda warm I guess? Like I sort of tense up and I can't stop thinking about him. Then my heart races whenever he looks at me. It's kinda like when I'm running really fast and stuff, but...I don't know...am I dying Tails?" I ask seriously.

There's a moment of silence before Tails bursts into laughter. "You think... you think you're dying because of Shadow?"

I frown. "Tails I'm serious!"

Tails tries to calm down, still chuckling. "Sonic you're not dying. What you're describing sounds more like... you have a crush on Shadow."

I freeze. "A what?"

Tails laughs again. "Sonic you've always had a sort of obsession with Shadow. I understand that your a nice person and want to be friends with everyone, but you've always been really persistent with Shadow. When he's around you always get all worked up and try to get his attention, whether that's annoying him or asking him for a race. When he's there you seem to forget about everyone else and focus only on him. Do you see where I'm going with this?" He asks, making sure I'm following along.

I just huff out a laugh. "Your blowing things way out of proportion here buddy, your making me sound like a fan or something. You almost make me sound like I'm Amy!" I cringe at the thought.

"Sonic listen to me very carefully" Tails replies. I straighten in my seat, my ears perked as I wait for what he's going to say.

"You.Have.A.Crush.On.Shadow." He sounds each word out slowly like I'm a child.

My heart skips a beat. "No way! I can't have a crush on Shadow!"

Tails' voice grows serious. "Sonic listen to me. You've been acting like this for a while now. You're just finally able to see it more clearly now that he's starting to open up to you and hanging around you more often."

"No. Nononono" I mumble.

"Well I gotta go, I'm adding some new features to the Tornado! So I'll leave you while you try to convince yourself otherwise and act like your not in denial, bye Sonic!" He says cheerfully before hanging up.

I sit there, staring at my phone, trying to wrap my mind around what just happened. A crush? On Shadow?

I look down at Onyx, who's sitting in front of me. "There's no way" I mutter to him as if he could understand me. "It's just admiration, right? I mean I know I had a strong reaction to him earlier, and sure he is like really cool and not bad looking either I guess..." If I think about it he's actually really hot... urgh, wait, no!

I tug at my quills in frustration, my mind racing. I can't like Shadow. It's just not possible. Besides, even if I did, it's not like he would ever like me back, right? My ears flatten against my head as that thought sinks in. Crap. I really do like him.
