Song recommendation:
This love

---

Jake stands by the window, staring at the city below. His home. The place where he was supposed to find peace. But peace is a cruel lie, slipping through his fingers like sand.

The capital is alive beneath him-lanterns flickering, merchants calling out their final trades of the night, carriages rolling through cobblestone streets. It should feel comforting. It doesn't.

He exhales, his breath fogging up the glass. The chill in his bones has nothing to do with the cold.

Sunghoon is back in the palace.

Preparing to be king.

Jake squeezes his eyes shut. The thought alone makes his chest ache in a way he hates. He shouldn't care. He can't care. He left for a reason.

He left so that he wouldn't have to watch the man he loves crown another beside him.

So why does it still feel like he's suffocating?

A knock at the door pulls him from his thoughts.

"Jake?"

Jungwon's voice is gentle, hesitant.

Jake straightens, running a hand through his hair before turning around. "Come in."

The door creaks open, and Jungwon steps inside, concern etched across his face. "You've been standing there for hours."

Jake lets out a dry chuckle. "Didn't realize you were keeping track."

Jungwon doesn't smile. "You should rest."

"I can't."

"You're thinking about him."

Jake flinches. He doesn't answer. He doesn't need to.

Jungwon sighs, stepping closer. "You knew this would happen, Jake. Sunghoon was always meant to be king."

"I know," Jake murmurs. His voice is barely above a whisper. "I just... I thought it would be easier."

Jungwon places a hand on his shoulder. "It never is."

Jake swallows hard, his eyes drifting back to the window. Somewhere beyond the horizon, Sunghoon is sitting in his chambers, preparing to take the throne. Preparing to wear the crown that will bind him to duty forever.

And Jake will never be a part of that world again.

No matter how much he wishes he could.

---

Meanwhile, in the Palace...

Sunghoon sits in front of the grand mirror, his reflection staring back at him.

The ceremonial robes weigh heavy on his shoulders. The crown-his father's crown-rests beside him on a velvet cushion. By sunrise, it will be his.

He should feel honored. He should feel ready.

He doesn't.

Because the only thing heavier than the crown is the emptiness Jake left behind.

His hands clench into fists. The cold of the night seeps through the palace walls, but it is nothing compared to the ice settling in his chest.

Jake is gone.

And yet, his presence lingers in every shadow, in every whisper of the wind.

Sunghoon exhales sharply, running a trembling hand through his hair. He should be preparing for the ceremony. He should be thinking about his people, his kingdom.

But all he can think about is him.

Jake's voice still haunts him. That's not love, that's selfishness.

Maybe Jake was right. Maybe Sunghoon was selfish.

Because right now, he would trade the entire kingdom just to have him back.

But kings don't get to be selfish.

Kings don't get to love.

And when the sun rises, Sunghoon will wear the crown.

Even if it means losing Jake forever.
