KARA MOVED THROUGH HER bedroom with practiced ease, neatly folding a few pieces of clothing and placing them into a small leather travel bag. She wasn't taking much ─ just enough for a day or two ─ but Klaus, sitting on the edge of her bed with his arms crossed, was acting as if she were packing for an eternity away.

His expression was nothing short of petulant, his lower lip slightly jutted in an unmistakable pout.

It had been a day since their mother had tried to kill them all. A day since she had sworn she wouldn't leave him, promising to stand by his side like she always had.

And yet, here she was, preparing to walk out the door ─ even if only temporarily.

Klaus's voice broke the silence, laced with irritation. "I thought you weren't going to leave me."

Kara didn't even look up from her task, "You're being ridiculous." She said placing a folded dress into the bag.

Klaus scoffed, "I think it's you who's being ridiculous, sister. A day ago, you swore you wouldn't leave me." He flopped dramatically onto his back, his arms spread out across the bed.

Kara rolled her eyes. "I'm not leaving you, Nik. I'll be gone for one day. Maybe two." She added some shoes into her bag, watching her twin brother carefully.

"Too long," he muttered under his breath.

She let out an exasperated sigh, "I need to see a friend. Not everything revolves around you, you know?" shaking her head as she reached for another outfit.

At that, Klaus sat up, narrowing his eyes, "Of course, it does. You and I are bound by blood, by a millennium of shared existence. I, as your twin brother, should be your priority, not some insignificant human you call a friend."

Kara stilled for just a moment before shooting him a glare. "He's not insignificant."

That, more than anything, caught Klaus's attention. His lips curled into something that wasn't quite a smirk, his curiosity piqued by her immediate defense.

"And what, pray tell, is so important about this friend that you must abandon me?"

Kara zipped up her bag, slinging it over her shoulder with finality. "I just need to see him, Nik."

Klaus arched a brow, his blue eyes darkening slightly. "Him?"

Kara ignored the way his voice sharpened at the word, choosing instead to move toward the door.
